Support Group for those switching from WebOS (palm pre) to Nexus S 4g

I am switching to the Nexus S on sunday, and I think the one thing I will miss is the gesture area. It does seem like a regression to go back to buttons, but at least the phone will work and be of non-questionable quality.

Plus I'm a big google fan (CR48 even) so I'm pumped.

Another early pre user signing in for the Nexus S 4G and out of the Pre. On my second Pre, battery is shot, keyboard is flaky, major oreo effect, and the ear speaker works intermittently.

Things I'll miss in order:

1.) Touchstone.
Love to drop it there and have it charge while listening to the music.

2.) Pre homebrew community.

3.) Synergy.

Things I'll not miss:

1.) The hardware.

On the "waiting list" at a Sprint store (a piece of paper). I wonder what the demand will be at launch? It's high among us enthusiasts, but I wonder what the demand among the general public will be.

Yet another launch-day Pre- user jumping ship. As much as I like the OS, I have never really liked the slider hardware since you can't get a decent skin or case for it. After about 5 cases and holsters, I've been sporting the original microfiber pouch.

HP has definitely shot themselves in the foot by waiting so many months to introduce a new OS and device. The app community never took off, either. Look at major players like Evernote who just threw crappy versions of an app at the WebOS just so they had a presence there - no real development ever occured.

The thing I will miss most is the Synergy. I have two hosted Exchange accounts, a Gmail account, a Facebook account (not used much) and other things that all interconnect flawlessly. I'm not getting a big warm fuzzy feeling moving to Android in that regard.

Another thing - I also have the Touchstone charger in my car. That will be sorely missed.

I wonder that too. I called a couple of weeks ago to be put on the list. Just called now to make sure I was indeed on the list and I heard the guy ask someone else "is there a list for those Nexus S phones?" Regardless, he too took my name down to save me a couple on launch day.

I spent the day making a list of what I had installed on my Pre and then searching apps in the Android Market that will do the same thing. I'm hoping "Settings Profile" will do everything that "Mode Switcher" currently does. The rest of the apps I use I could take or leave but I'd really miss the functionality of Mode Switcher.

I agree about Mode Switcher. I get that Android can do just about everything we all like about our Pre's. The thing about Web OS is that if you just buy a Pre and take the one step of setting up PreWare on it, most of the things we all like are either built into the experience or really easy to find and set up. With the old Palm OS Treos I had become used to having to invest a few hours a month into tinkering with my phone to keep it running just right or to make it better. What I've loved about the Pre is that almost every customization is just a quick OTA download and you're off. I sure hope Android works that way, but I'm skeptical. I don't want Android to turn out to be a modern-day Windows Mobile.

Another launch day heading over, and I am going to miss gestures more than anything. Anytime I have a touchscreen device in my hand now I expect to be able to swipe and make things happen - only problem is, they won't anymore :( Still, I'm geeked about the Nexus, so it should be ok.

Plus, there are a bunch of us making this switch together, so that should make things easier!

Sad to see a bunch of us switching over. I have a Pixi now after my 4th Pre died out. I'm going to miss the card system, gesture area and notification like others. However, I'm also going to miss the homebrew scene going on over there. It's so easy to tweak a webOS phone. Don't know if I'll feel the need to root my Nexus S.

I'm switching over for the new hardware and selection of apps. Also hoping the Nexus S 4G has better battery life than these webOS phones.

My husband just got the Epic a few weeks ago and he also was a Pre user. I asked him if it was hard getting use to the non swipe thing and he said it didn't take him long to get use to the android set up at all. He's really liking the apps that the android market has to offer and he loves some of the games. I guess I could practice with his phone before getting mine on Sunday.

I'm glad to see so many Webos fans are making the leap to the Nexus with me. I don't think the Average Android user will ever understand just what we are giving up.

Amen.

"Just Type" I forgot about that. That is probably my favorite thing about the phone.

Hopefully we can keep this thread alive for a few weeks, Im looking forward to hearing how everyone makes the adjustment.

I am also going to be making the switch, I am not on the list or pre ordered, but I will go either on Sunday or Monday and make the purchase. I am lookng forward for a few reasons...My pre has been having issues with shutting off after closing and pushing the power button, also just seems slow. Not much has been coming out in the catalog for a while now, Also fed up waiting for things like flash, and just no other app support for so many things like Dish network, audible, XM radio, etc. It has so many features I will miss but will learn to live with android as there will be alot more users using android based systems then anyone else soon. I think Apple is overrated and think Android is going to be where it is at. R.I.P. my Palm Pre :(

Launch day owner here (upgraded to pre plus as well). I am going with the nexus also. I've really waited long enough for Hpalm to get some new hardware to me. I will miss the same things everyone else said before. Most for me is just type.

If anyone is going to miss the touchstone as much as me, there are some write-ups for rigging it to work for the nexus one. I may attempt this on my nexus s. We'll see if I miss it as much as I think I will.

Hopefully, we will all stick around here and help each other through the transition.

I don't know about rigging the touchstone to work with Nexus -- looks pretty sketchy. But do any of you know of any good Android apps that could be used to emulate what the Touchstone does? Obviously not inductive charging, but I'm thinking about putting a dock in my car. So any ideas about apps to make it default to speakerphone when on a charger, keep screen on, etc.?

Little bit of a snag for me. I just called my local Sprint store and they are not even open on Sunday. They have a kiosk in the mall that will be open so I have called there and if they do get the phones by Friday (their regular delivery day) the guy there will call me on Saturday to let me know so I can pick it up from him on Sunday. Otherwise I will just have to wait until Monday. Kind of strange to release a phone on a certain day and not being able to get it from a Sprint store!

I'm hoping that one of the sprint stores by me will have a Nexus S 4G to play with before launch. I want to use a stock android phone and see how I like it. Not this sense crap. Never the less as mentioned i'm on a "list". I'll defiantly be waiting in a line I plan to create.

My sprint store is opening up at noon. Very odd for a Sunday release, especially being mothers day.

Greetings

Hello everyone. So happy that this thread was created! Launch day Pre- user here, can't wait to get my hands on the Nexus. The Evo 3D is so enticing but battery life is what concerns me the most. Battery is probably the biggest grip I have with my pre currently, aside from speed.

Looking forward to hearing about everyone's experience as they make the transition. As noted by others, I believe there is a large contingent of Pre- owners that are jumping ship to the Nexus. HPalm really failed to execute and are going to have to start from scratch, or even at a disadvantage since folks have lost faith...

As a former palm pre owner (Sprint), I can assure anyone who's thinking of, or had already make the switch to Android... that after getting familiar with the Android OS, you won't even remember what you missed about Webos.

Android is a very customizable and intuitive operating system. To further explain about the Android System -- Please tap on the link in my signature.
