That news made my day.. I make international trips once in a while and I bought the last phone (incredible 2) just because it could be sim unlocked and used overseas with local sim .. Now the news that our maXX, including some other moto phones will be able to do the same with the software upgrade is incredible.. its like an icing on the my 7 layer chocolate moose cake.. Love it...

I never knew it was just a software upgrade away.. lol.. its like att using its software majic to turn iphone 4s to a 4G phone... :p

THank You THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!

I have been waiting YEARS for Verizon to realize how much business they are missing by not allowing us to use the GSM mode.

My complaints were finally heard.

Any idea on how long before the updates?

No idea about when thats going to be .. but its all over the news and is confirmed from verizon... so.. i am just happy.. and hope it will be bundled with ICS update we all are eagerly waiting for......:D

Yupe...happening just in time. I leave Afghanistan in a couple of months. LOL

I too am happy about this. In the past I have just had to pull my old Blackberry out everytime I traveled overseas. Picking up a $10 pre-paid local SIM card will last my entire trip.

So, how does this work?
We update the phone and just start calling anywhere on the GLOBE?
Free?
Or does VZW have to turn something on with our plan?
More monthly cost?

Thanks, everybody. Been here for 9 months already...it's about time I come home. :)

@ Droidntn...your phone will be capable of hooking up to other networks overseas, but it WILL cost you! I'm sure Verizon will have some special "international" package you can switch to.

Now the Maxx will be the PERFECT phone!!! Time to toss my BB Storm 2 out. I wonder if I can still sell it- doubt it.

If you use the Verizon SIM.

Probably not. Ebay still has a few left but no one is buying them. I'll use mine as a paper weight for now.

RAZR and RAZR MAXX have had global capabilities for a few months but now it's official from VZW. I did recall seeing it back a few months on how to unlock it but I don't have much use for it when I saw it to go through the 10 minutes of downloading files and rebooting and installing this and that for something I was not going to use.
I just hope they do it when ICS rolls out.

I have a BB Curve, Storm and Storm 2 that are currently being used as paper weights. I look at them every now and then and just laugh. ;)

I read in a recent news item that we could also use prepaid SIM cards abroad as well, so we won't necessarily have to buy a VZW global plan. But this was only a news article, not from VZW itself.
