Swipe to unlock periodically doesn't work

I like to double click the virtual home button and then swipe to open. I've noticed that sometimes I swipe and swipe and then the screen turns off without opening the phone. Is this happening to anyone else? It doesn't matter what I have had open last. It occurs on restart sometimes too without anything open in the background.

Hasn't happened to me in the 2 and a half weeks I've had my N8. Do you have a screen protector installed?

Yes I do but it recognizes that I'm trying to swipe but never opens the phone.
