Switch off or Sleep Mode?

Am I right in thinking that after the Nexus isnt used for a minute and the screen goes black, that this is "sleep mode"?

Is this the same thing that happens when you hold a magnet over the bottom left corner?

I havent has a chance to try testing it out, but other than instant-on, is there any drawback to just using "sleep mode" instead of powering it off with the side button? i.e battery drain, etc

There's no difference in letting the screen timeout, using the magnet or pressing the power button. It's all the same and one has no advantage. Well, I guess letting the screen timeout would use a little more battery because of the simple fact that the screen is on a little longer.

And when you say "power off", I'm assuming you mean simply pressing the power, and not actually shutting the device down.

From what I understand:

- Brief push of power button or allowing the screen to time out is "sleep mode". This is what I use. It uses surprisingly little power but I still get my notifications because I have background data on and WiFi on.

- Magnet applied in the correct place is reportedly a lower-power "deep sleep mode". I know little about that but a few forum mentions of it.

- Power Down = push and hold the power button for a couple of seconds, and follow the prompt to power the unit all the way down. There should be little to no battery drain except the normal self-drain inherent to rechargeable batteries.

The power drain in "sleep mode" depends on your settings. If you set WiFi ti turn off in "sleep mode", then you'll draw very little power. In my case, while at work yesterday and leaving a freshly-charged Nexus 7 on my bedside table in "sleep mode" with WiFi turned ON, I got home after 11 hours to discover the battery was at 95% charge. So it pulled about a half percent of charge per hour in regular "sleep mode" with WiFi on. All my email had come in during the day, and I saw my Google Talk chats on the device. I probably could have saved a few percent by turning off WiFi or turning the unit completely off. I choose "instant on, always available".

My wife reported on a previous day that the device's notification sounds bleeped whenever she sent me an IM, so I know it's active when in "sleep mode".

Not sure if the "deep sleep" mode is fact or fiction. I would think it would be an advertised feature, and the software would have to know a magnet shut it off as opposed to another method. Not too mention the user would want to know things such as wi-fi, bluetooth, etc. would be off when powering off with the magnet.

Anyway, this topic was just brought up yesterday. Here's the link.

If you don't have this enabled and you aren't using the tablet for primary email/message notification, you should really do this. My N7 can sit next to my bed for 24hrs and burn only 2-3% of battery while it is asleep with wifi off. You can set the wifi during sleep to be always on, on only when charging, or always off when sleeping.

Open you wifi options > menu > settings > advanced > keep wifi on during sleep > chose never or only when charging
