My issue is basically what I stated in the title. I have deactivated my iphone but my friends tell me that their phones try and send me Imessages which fail to send so they have to send them as text messages. Is there some fix for this? Or will it work itself out in time?

I know even when I deactivated my phone I was still getting iMessages. I had to log out of iCloud on my iPhone. You may be able to reset your iphone and have it work but I am not completely sure that will solve the problem.

I just switched from a 4S to a moto x. Make sure to turn off imessage on your iphone. Also when you turn off imessage make sure to change your apple id password. I did this and had no problems texting with iphones.

Go into iMessage settings on your iPhone and remove your phone number as an option to send/receive iMessages.

At the very least you need to turn off iMessage on every iOS device you have connected to. If even say, an iPad has it on, any other iOS user (iPhone specifically in this case) will default to iMessage and in turn try to send it to whatever device you still have iOS activated on.

If you have unregistered your iPhone then I am not sure anything can help you.
Sign out of Imessage
Unregister your iPhone
If you still have issues and I know this is a pain get your iPhone friends to delete your contact info and enter it again. It looks like this may have stopped this with my friend.
If all else fails this is apple doing this to you. Call them to see if they will stop.
I just moved from iPhone too and if unregistering does not work I will be calling apple.
