switching back to the factory sms app

No matter how many times I clear the default settings for hangouts it keeps coming back as my default sms app. How can I prevent this?

Try setting it, then restarting the device. After doing see if it stuck.

Curious, you didn't install any other SMS/Text app, did you? I wonder if something else is causing this. Hence the question...

I am not sure what you mean by clearing the default settings. But did you go into your Settings >More >Default SMS app, and select the radio button next to the app you desire to use? If not try that.

I disabled hangouts, cleared data, and uninstalled updates. It switched back now.

I coincidentally just disabled Google Hangouts, too. I can't stand that on my device. Honestly...

Well, glad you got it figured out.

When using hangouts I was getting a lot of failure to send text messages and mms.
