Switching from iOS to GN3

Hi y'all, I am one more Apple user that has decided to take the leap of faith. I had already owned a number of Android tablets, including the Galaxy Note 8", but have always found them unresponsive and too laggy. Last week I purchased the new Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 and I'm really impressed with what this beast can do and how far Android has come. This has led me to decide to sell my iPhone 5 and buy a Galaxy Note 3, which I'll be doing next week.

However, I must acknowledge that iOS apps look better and work in a more smooth manner than their Android counterparts. I am now looking for replacements for some iOS servicesand functionalities and hope you can help me.

1. On iOS, I can select any text anywhere (even on Safari) and a popup buttom allows you to have the selected text read to you, plus the system automatically recognizes the language and chooses the corresponding TTS voice. Is there anything similar on Android? I can't get Google TTS to work on Chrome.

2. Is spellcheck really coming on KitKat? It is a hell of a practical feature on iOS.

3. Is there a way to bypass Samsung's limit of 4 languages for keyboards and voice dictation?

4. Which app would you recommend for automating notification mute at night?

Apart from a few things, which are still more practical on iOS, I've come to realize that Android is in general a much better OS. Right now I'm typing this on a Galaxy Note 10.1 using an external bluetooth keyboard and mouse, while watching a Youtube video and streaming its audio to a Jambox. I would never dream of doing so on iOS!

Anyway, thanks for the help!

Welcome to the forums and Android!
I will try to answer your questions.

1. Not that I am aware of. Hangouts is probably close, but not quite what you are looking for.

2. Spell check, or more like auto correct, was on 4.2 Jellybean, possibly even 4.1 (I didn't start using it until recently)

3. Try Google Keyboard instead. I think the other languages serve as separate apps and act like plugins. As for a language limit, I am not sure.

4. Many Androids have some kind of Do not Disturb feature. I would look to see if Samsung has one stock. Otherwise, Tasker ($4 or $5 in Play) should have this function along with many others.

Hope the learning curve is small, and should be since you already own an Android device.

Check out this app. You should be able to try it on your Note 10.1 to see if it was you are looking for!

Where do you need spell check?

3. Is there a way to bypass Samsung's limit of 4 languages for keyboards and voice dictation?

Not sure on this one. I only ever use 1 language so I can't help you there.

4. Which app would you recommend for automating notification mute at night?

The Note 3 comes with blocking mode, which I believe is what you are looking for!

Thanks for the replies! Here's some feedback:

1. TextAloud is a nice app, but I should say the iOS solution is a lot more elegant, the TTS engine automatically recognizes the language and reads the text without opening any other app, directly from, say, Safari. It encompasses more languages, too.

2. Autocorrection is not really what I am looking for. On iOS, when I change the keyboard/input language, the system highlights (underlines with a dotted line) the mispelled words, while offering right alternatives. On the Note 10.1, although the stock Samsung keyboard offers corrections above the keyboard, it does not highlight mispelled words. This means I may miss a typo or two whenever I write a text. I mainly need spellcheck for e-mails, Facebook posts and short texts on QuickOffice.

3. Samsung does not give me the option to use the Google keyboard, I would have to use a third-party app for that. Unfortunately I was not able to find any keyboard that fulfills my needs. SwiftKey, for instance, supports a maximum of 3 languages at once. I know this is a very specific need, but I work with many languages and need multilingual support for that.

4. Yes, this blocking mode sounds like exactly what I need, thanks!

Is there anything similar on Android? I can't get Google TTS to work on Chrome. Do you have the handsfree mode enabled?

2. Is spellcheck really coming on KitKat? It is a hell of a practical feature on iOS. Been there for a while now and works well!

3. Is there a way to bypass Samsung's limit of 4 languages for keyboards and voice dictation? Have you tried the SwiftKey keyboard? It really is a better alternative to the Samdung stock keyboard.

4. Which app would you recommend for automating notification mute at night? I use "Smart profiles". You can pretty much make it do anything you want using a one-button press, or as you are asking for, timers. I have my phone turning doing the following at 12 am, automatically: WiFi ON, Mobile Data OFF, Phone notifications ON 100%, All other notifications OFF, Sync OFF, Screen at 35% when on, Bluetooth OFF and a whole bunch of other things. I have 3 different profiles I setup...2 on timers, and one for car mode on Bluetooth.

Anyway, thanks for the help!

For number 2. I had nexsus 4 before I decided to switch to note 3. And this is the only feature that I miss. I dont know why the hell samsung decided to get rid of Google spell check. I miss highlighting the mistakes. This a basic feature that I think every phone should have. I have been searching for weeks now to have this feature installed on my note 3. Note 3 is a such a beast and this feature is available on low end devices. Its such shame!
Did anyone find a solution to this. Come on Samsung.
