I'm a noob when it comes to this so bear with me but when I switch from the Pre to the Evo how do I transfer my contacts? is it via the machine at the store and then I will have to sync them up on the Evo? Do I need to download any of my stuff to my computer first? I searched the threads for these questions but couldn't find any. I will be out of town on the 4th and not back until 10th. I want know if switch will be easy enough to on the road or if I should wait until I get back home.

I did last weekend, getting the contacts with the patch gekko pointed to worked great. BUT it does not pull the contact pics so they will have to be manually uploaded to you google account. And also make sure you remove other contact accounts (Facebook) because the patch will copy them as well.

Since you're a self-proclaimed noob, I'll point you in the right direction since this topic has been discussed on a few separate threads.

In the future, go ahead and try a search before opening a new thread. I know it's hard sometimes since you don't always know what terms to search by, but this subject is an easy one. ;)

If the Pre has Google Sync that is by far the easiest way thats how i transferred my contacts from my blackberry to my moment when i got it.

Thanks for all the help. Like I said in my original post I did a search and didn't find the two other threads you pointed out.

Since I use Google for email and it appears all my contacts are already sync'd to that account then when I get the EVO and log on to Goggle they should be there, right?

You can double check what contacts you have in gmail by checking the "contacts" piece. You'll want to double check at least one of the previous posts about syncing of all gmail contacts as well to make sure that you don't get all of the unnecessary contacts showing up on your phone. I believe there was a decent guide in the HTC Hero section of this forum, about easter eggs and other helpful hints.

Wow. Seriously? You own a Pre and you're asking if you need a specific machine to transfer contacts? webOS cannot sync to a machine, they only sync to a service--this is like the most basic tenet of webOS.

That said, you are either syncing your contacts to:

-Palm Profile (I hope not...)
-Google account
-Other web account compatible with webOS synergy (yahoo?)

If you are using a Google account, then this is a no-brainer. Simply enter your Gmail/Google credentials on the new phone and there you go.

If you are using yahoo or some other account, I would suggest you export your contact list, and import to a Google account you plan to use with the phone.

If you have contacts synced to your Palm Profile--this can happen if (1) manually designate Palm Profile as default (2) you start saving contacts unwittingly to the Palm Profile before setting up a synergy account--you'll have to copy those contacts out to one of your other accounts first. You'll have to do this on the phone.

So, you do not need a machine to do this.

I can't remember where I read this, but here's a neat trick for anytime you want to clean up your contacts on Google.

There are two major sets your contacts are organized in: "My Contacts" and "All Contacts".

The My Contacts set is stuff you've explicitly added, and most likely you're happy with those. The All Contacts set contains all of My Contacts, plus email addresses that gmail "helpfully" adds for you without asking. Chances are, most of the editing you're going to want to do is in those added emails (either deleting, or filling in more info). Unfortunately, there's no obvious way to just display these automatically-added contacts.

... but there's a workaround. In the search box, type a space character, then hit enter. Contacts will display all your contacts... but it will separate them in the list into "My Contacts" and "Other Contacts". The Other Contacts is all the ones Google added without asking. Now you can edit or delete them easily.

thanks for this tip! i don't know if it's common knowledge or not, but i was unaware of it and it's definitely helpful.
