Switching from WP7.5 to Android

Cool! My son plays tuba / sousaphone so he doesn't get the chance in a Jazz band.

Back in middle school, our Bass Guitars were Sausaphone/Tuba players. Our conductor made them learn how to play the bass guitar lol.

OK, downloaded Apex Launcher, free version for now, and a couple themes and started playing around with it. A Lot of settings and options I got to figure out what they mean and do. Pretty cool stuff you can do with the looks of your phone.

Yeah. This is the magic of android. But let me warn you once you start getting into the habit of customizing you will never stop. It's just that much fun Haha. :D

Can someone explain to what exactly are app drawers and docks? I've set up some new home screens using Apex Launcher. Liked being able to set up 6 screens with ability for 3 more.

Is a dock those row of apps right down at the bottom of a screen? Is a drawer used to store apps in on a screen but have them hidden in the drawer until you open it?

The dock houses all of your main apps that you use the most.
The app drawer is pretty much like the app list on windows phone 7, when you scroll over to the right, and is a place where you can find all of your apps on your phone.

So how is the dock drawer different from the screens you go into with all the app icons in grid pattern. I know what your saying about in WP7, your second screen was just a list alphabetically of all your installed apps.

The dock is the row of icons at the bottom of your screen. And the drawer is where you see the grid of icons. I'm primarily a nova user, so I haven't tinkered with apex much. Someone more familiar with it than I can take you through the in and out.
Here is the thing about android, as you have discovered. It is all about choice. Whenever I talk to someone about using their phone, I tell them up front that if they ever tell me they don't like an app, or a layout, I'll going to tell them to go to play, and download an alternative. Your launcher, as an example. Nova and Apex are the two mentioned here. But hit play and search "launcher" and see what happens. So the same with "dialer", and so on. As another user said, the hardest part of rooting/unlocking has been done for you. This opens up a couple of possibilities for you, outside of flashing. Learn titanium backup. Also, research doing nandroid backups in recovery (these create a total image of your phone, from the kernel up, as it is when you perform the back up). If you really want to start getting dirty, aokp has a theme manager. Look up aokp themes in play, and find something that you like, make a nandroid back up, and flash the theme. And if you're eyes just glazed over at that last statement, I understand. I'm not saying do it now. Just demonstrating some of your possibilities beyond home screen modifications, if you do choose to take it that far

I've been reading up on the Nandroid backup and I'm going to get myself set up to do that. What is a titanium backup (I know probably go look up the Android Dictionary in the Help forum):D

Titanium backup is an app that requires root and is used to back up all of your data on your device. This includes backing up everything from games to contacts.

I went ahead and I loaded ROM Manager and from that it allowed me to flash ClockWorkMod Recovery. In ROM Manager then I did the backup routine on it. It rebooted the phone and then you see on the screen that its backing up a boot image, recovery image, system and then does a data backup. After completing it restarted the phone.

So did this just perform then a nandroid backup and am I ready to flash another ROM? In ROM Manager I can search for updates to my existing Vicious Rom and can also search for other Roms to flash.

Does anyone know if you can set different wallpapers on different pages? I'm using Apex Launcher.

Well flashed a newer version of Vicious Toro on my phone . I let ROM Manager after doing a backup wipe everything clean as far as the system and data. Figured start from scratch in hopes the new ROM fixes getting that error problem downloading some Apps. I didn't have that many apps so I don't have too much to reload. May try a different launcher instead of Apex just to try something else.

One thing I'm not sure about what happened is that by telling ROM Manager to wipe my data clean, I lost what apps I had loaded along with my different accounts set up, so I had to reset those.

I was surprised to find all my music files, album art and some photos I had taken on the phone camera! That is data that ROM Manager does not delete?

The other thing I was dumfounded over was when I first logged back on to my google account when first restarting the phone, it went through supposedly reloading my backed up data, but I did not get back those apps I had loaded. I had my settings set for backups to be done automatically. So I'm not sure if the Google backup was not working or I'm all confused with what these different backups (Google, ROM Manager) do in fact back up? I did do a nandroid backup of my phone with ROM Manager before and before flashing the new ROM, I down loaded a couple new apps and changed some things around on my home screens and then reloaded that nandroid backup and everything came back the way it had been and those new apps were gone off my phone. So I know that nandroid backup worked all OK backing up my apps and stuff.

While I can answer some of your questions, there are much more experienced root experts that can help you if you create a separate thread about rooting, in the hacking section of the VZW galaxy nexus forums. That would be the best way to answer your questions.

I did in fact post my questions here in a thread I started under the general help forum. Thanks.

Oh ok. That's good, but if u post in the vzw galaxy nexus root forums section, you will most likely get more answers because more people check that forum then they do the general help section.

Well after flashing the updated Vicious ROM I've been able to reload iSyncr and after reloading Apex Launcher I was able to load thus time the Pro version!

Got my new pages set up with most everything reloaded. Found a pretty neat theme I liked (think it was a Go Launcher one). Here's some shots of some of the new pages.
