Sync contacts with Google?

I really can't find the answer for this after searching, and thanks in advance for any help.

It seems pretty basic, but HOW do I sync my phone contacts with Google? I have a regular old EVO with a few apps. I have a gmail account that I've used for years. I'm pretty sure in my settings I have it set up to sync with google. EDIT: Just checked and google account definitely has "sync contacts" marked. So what am I doing wrong?

I'm almost positive this is human error. Am I not looking in the right spot for my contacts? To find my contacts, I go to gmail and then look for contacts. I see a few phone contacts, but that's it. They seem to be the contacts that are in my "favorites" from the people/contact widget.

So to summarize, can someone please give me a step-by-step on how to sync my phone contacts with google and then where to find the contacts in google once they're synced? Thanks!

Add a test contact into phone. Make sure you have good 3g signal at a minimum. Wait. Perhaps you are expecting instant sync? This works seamlessly on my EVO and gmail...are you being impatient?...it may take a bit to show in your gmail contacts (minutes after the sync)

I have been looking for an answer to this as well. I had a Windows mobile device and kept all of my contacts up to date using my works exchange server.

When I came over to Android I was able to set up my exchange server account and download all of my contacts to my phone... but have yet to find a way to send those to my gmail account so those contacts can be better used with thing like Google voice.

Am I missing something?

If you trying to have the Exchange contacts go from the phone up to Google, that will not happen from the phone (unless you do them individually). You will have to download those from Exchange via Outlook to a CSV file and then upload to Google from your desktop.

Yea the phone wont sync new contacts to google, only the other way around. What I did was backed them up/export them in csv. You can then go to gmail and import the csv file. I did a hard reset after the 2.2 update and then it brought all the contacts down from google. I'm not sure if you need to do a hard reset, I was just doing it anyway.

That's not true. When I add new contacts to my phone, I am presented with the option to sync to Google or EAS accounts.

Let me rephrase that, when you add new ones, if you make them google contacts everything is fine. I meant to say new contacts that are saved to the phone(as phone contacts, not google contacts) wont sync over to google. You either have to remove them then add them to your phone again and make sure to make them google contacts, or use my method above.

Okay, I guess this is where I'm confused. I had the Pre, went to Sprint, and they hooked up my phone to some machine and BAM, my contacts, numbers, pics, etc., were on my EVO. I'm looking for contacts from my phone that would go to google via a sync who have been on my phone for a couple months. I'm not expecting an immediate sync.

Now, if I have a contact on my EVO that is NOT a FB friend and doesn't have gmail associated with him, will his contact information upload to google and sync? Or do I have to do something special, like the CSV method mentioned above?

I guess this is what I need to do. How the heck do I do this? And why can't I just click some button that says "sync" in order to sync all of my contacts to gmail?

Make your primary account a Google Account. Add contacts to your primary account on the phone and it will update to your Google account.

Before I flashed a new ROM I added a contact to my phone book the day before and he showed up when I synced with my Google Apps.

Hope this helps.

First, thanks! Second, how do I make google my "primary account"? I see all of my accounts under settings, but I can't figure out a way to rank them as primary, secondary, etc. But maybe that's because you mean this ---> Next, when you say "add contacts to your primary account" do you mean going to my contacts in "People" and individually editing them so that "google" is first and not "phone"? Those were the only two options I saw on a couple of my most used contacts (ones I only call/text but am not friends with on FB).

Coach its really easy.

1. Open up people.
2. Hit menu>export> export to sd card.
3. Get the csv file from your SD card onto a computer. Either thru astro or mounting to your pc.
4. Go to the Gmail webpage.
5. Click contacts.
6. Click import in the top right corner.
7. Selce the csv file.
This should do it. Your gmail account should be your primary email account to I believe. Now what Im not sure is if you leave those people in your contacts will they all get duplicated or not. If thats the case you can just delete them all. You'll have the csv as a back up.

I think you can also manually change each contact from phone to google. That sounds like a pain if there is a lot of them.
