Sync Nexus 5 using usb cable

Hi All,

I use a 3G USB cellular modem card to connect my Win7 laptop to the internet.

I've never used Android before. I just purchased a Nexus 5 and will take delivery of it in a week or so. Where I live in India there's no wifi and I would prefer to use my Nexus 5 voice only (with no data plan).

I have a basic question. Can I use USB cable to connect my Nexus 5 to my laptop to update and sync the phone?

I googled this question but I want to make sure 4.4 KitKat can do this.

I want to put my Calendar, Tasks and Contacts on the Nexus 5 and then, when I get back home at the end of the day, sync up the changes to my Gmail account over the USB cable.

If Nexus 5 cannot update and sync with Internet using USB cable, then I need to explore getting a 3G WiFi Router or something like Connectify Hotspot Pro.
