Sync only My Contacts not All Contacts

This has been driving me nuts forever. Every time I get an email from someone it adds them in to my All Contacts group - fine. The problem is that my Eris always auto-syncs them in to my contact list. If I log in to gmail, I have a set group of My Contacts, and that's what I want my Eris to sync. I have googled this and searched forever. None of the options ever work.

I go to people>menu, and i don't get any option of accounts to sync. If I go to people>group, it lists My Contacts, and it shows the correct amount of people, but it doesn't show All Contacts, and it certainly doesnt give any option of not syncing All Contacts.

How can I make this stop happening so I don't go crazy? I'm at my wit's end and I can't figure it out.

Note: I am on the latest build of 2.1, but this has been a problem for me on 1.6, the old 2.1, and the new 2.1.

I'm not sure if it is the same on 2.1, but on 1.5 this is what you do:

People app
Go to groups - the third icon along the bottom
Menu
Sync Groups
turn off "Sync all contacts" (and change any other groups syncing you want or do not want)- click save

tried that (on all os's), but didnt work. "sync groups" doesnt appear in any menu in my people app. thanks though!

On 2.1, go into People -> Menu -> View -> uncheck Show auto Gmail contacts. See if that works for you.

I have a related question maybe someone can help?

Since I've been rooting my phone and therefore wiping info regularly I find that my contacts' primary number is being reset each time? Since it syncs with Google wouldn't the first number listed in a contact serve as the primary number?

For example Dad I would want the cell phone to be the primary number but every time I reset and after it syncs it still displays the home number first.

any way around this?

I've a similar problem but the "show auto gmail contacts" isn't a good enough solution for me unfortunately

I've posted a new thread with my problem here and would appreciate any help at all by the way, it's the HTC Desire I'm having the problem with!
