Syncing Android contact with Gmail

I have the sync option turned on on my Samsung Galaxy Ace, but I cannot find my contact when logged into Gmail. Is there something else I need to do? Looking at the problem, it would appear that moving my contacts into a google grouping may be required but it's not at all obvious how this is done.
