Syncing existing contacts TO Gmail (Please help!)

I'm sorry if this question has been answered before, but I search and could not find an answer for this particular problem. I got my Evo today and they took the old contacts from my old Samsung, that did not sync to Google, and put them on my Evo. I logged into my Gmail account and turned on syncing, but the contacts that are in my phone have not shown up in Gmail at all. Am I missing a setting checkbox somewhere?

The phone contacts and the Gmail contacts are completely separate. Unfortunately there is no setting you can enable to upload the phone contact directly to Gmail. What you need to do is download a free app in the market called ExportContacts. Read the app description for more info and what to do next.

What if you add a new contact to your phone? Does it automatically sync with Gmail?

When you add a contact to the phone you need to add it as a Gmail contact and then it will sync to Gmail automatically. The OP's didn't work that way because of the way they were imported to the phone.
