Syncing old messages when phone is out of range

Ok, I never noticed this before using Textra. But I went back to the default messaging app and it still happens. Whenever I get out of range of my phone, my S2 starts receiving old messages I've already read from my phone. The only relevant setting I've found on the watch OR the Gear app is you can set the period to sync messages to a week or longer intervals. So...I guess...any message I'm NOT reading specifically on my watch is then syncing whenever I get out of range. What am I missing that could stop this???
