System Updates - a formal update checker?

I've tried to look around to see if I can find out exactly what this service/app is for, but I'm still confused by it.

Is this a formal update checker for Android? Sprint? Apps? It seems to me that it is always running and no matter how many times I stop the service or the app, it always comes back. Any updates I perform I've done manually with the help of our friends here at AC so I really don't have the need for my phone to check for updates on it's own. Plus, the odd thing is that when this is running, things I have not called on to run such as music player, video player, sometimes other apps pop up. Please correct me if I am wrong, but if something is listed as "Running" isn't it consuming battery? I try to keep the bare minimum active to conserve juice so I don't need to have something running apps without me doing it. I am prepared to remove it if necessary as I am rooted.

Thanks for any help or advice.

If your unsure of what the app is doing exactly, you can use Titanium Backup to "Freeze" the app. That should stop it from running and you can then see if there is any problems from doing so.

Other option if you have Root Explorer (paid app) from the Market, you can find the .apk linked to it and rename it to example, "xxxxxxx.bak" instead of "xxxxxx.apk" that way your not removing it, only renaming it so it doesn't run. If there is problems you can simply change the file extension from ".bak" to ".apk" and the application will be noticed/running again.

Edit: I'm guessing that the application your probably looking for is
Sprint_App_Updater.apk

I believe this application can be safely removed, you just won't receive automated updates and judging from the name its linked to only Sprint bloatware.

MarketUpdater.apk

Same goes for this too. You just won't receive automatic updates/notices on all Market apps.

If something does go wrong, just hit me up about it and I can always send you flashable zips in CWM to replace the apks, but I don't see any problem in removing them.

I thought about trying the rename thing of the .apk and letting it ride for a while to see what happens as I only have the free version of TB and Freeze is a paid option.

I'll give it a shot and let you know if anything misbehaves. Thanks Paul!
