All this update did to my phone was make it lag and cause false notification sounds even when all notifications are cleared. Quite annoying. I don't notice any changes that improve the phone at all.

I'd have to agree. Not seeing any fundamental changes. Yesterday I got several restarts for no apparent reason.

Kind of a large update simply for the fact there are no visual changes or anything noticeable that improves this phone. And ya I wish I held off on updating to the latest version :(

And to think that this once was supposed to be a bug fixer for you guys...

Did any of you do a restart, cache clear, or factory reset after updating to 5.1.1?

Good advice, sometimes a simple cache clear in recovery will help out tremendously.
A FDR is the last resort, but it can also greatly improve lag & other unwanted symptoms of a new OTA.

I didn't clear cache initially but now have done so. Still trying to figure out what this release has provided besides making the device lag a bit more.

Upgraded a few days ago and after giving it a few days, the phone is running better and faster than in a long time. The battery also lasts longer than before. I did not do a reset but cleared the cache.

It does seem you need to give the phone a few days after a firmware update for it to settle in. I noticed this also updating my s6 to 5.1.1 now it runs nice and smooth and random app crashes have stopped.

I'll be holding off on this update for long as I can if possible... it also keeps telling me the only way I can update it is via WiFi which I don't use.

I have the same issue. It restarts and my phone gets hot! :'(

Try this :)
Power down your phone, now press & hold the power button, volume up & the home button until your phone boots into Recovery. Now use the volume rocker to select Wipe Cache. Hit the power button to make it happen - give it a sec to clear the cache. Now use the volume rocker to select Reboot System - hit the power button & run you phone for a bit.
