Temporary Root For Evo runnning Froyo

I have the HTC EVO and tried z4root today. I installed and ran it, selecting temporary root. It seemed to have worked but when I tried Sprint's WiFi hotspot, I got the error 67 issue. I tried Titanium Backup and it indicated that it could not get root privilege. I did a full reboot and tried again but it didn't work.

First you cannot use sprints wireless tether service unless you pay that 30 dollars. You have to download a app from the market to get free wireless tethering.

Also titanium will not work unless you have busybox installed on your phone. When it says you don't have root, click problems in the bottom right hand side and it will install the latest busybox to your device.

If still no success go to SU and see if you are actually rooted.

I rooted my wifes hero with z4root but done a permanent root and her wireless tether works. Maybe its the temp root causing the problems.

Thanks for the reply - the issue regarding using the built-in tether was a question in my mind and I figured that was as you said, hence my trying Titanium to check if rooted. But regarding busybox install & checking SU - I had done both and the temp root had not worked.

Isosunrise said in his post above mine that z4root temp root no longer works. Permanent root or find another solution I guess is your choices now. I would use unrevoked if you go permanent root. It will flash the clockworkmod on to the phone for custom recovery. When I rooted my wifes hero it didn't flash a custom recovery to her phone and had to do it myself which isn't a true one click root IMO.

so temporary roots no longer work on the Evo ??? Is there any other way to get root access to modify the HOSTS file ?

The issue is that z4root no longer temorary roots, so wifi tethering of course doesn't work.

Ok. If you'd like to learn how to root your phone, you can start in one of the many stickies in this forum.

Good luck.

sorry, I meant to say "is there any way to get TEMPORARY root access in order to modify my HOSTS file". I am not interested in permanent rooting at this time- maybe soon though...

Reason behind not wanting to go permanent root now for? You can always unroot sir. Z4 root gives you a one click method to unroot if im not mistaken.

i guess i am just not fully educated / comfortable with rooting. right now, my only use for it would be modify the HOSTS file to block all the annoying and browser slowing ads, remove the preinstalled apps that i don't want to free up memory and use app to make screen shots.

it is true that i can unroot easily and have the phone exactly the same as before root right ?

So I was able to Temporary root my phone with z4root and i got the wife tethering. To work with no problems. Only why to get it to work was restart my phone and hold up on the volume button and power it up and then select fast boot the it loads and z4root works just starting the phone it does not work.

badday17, can you give me step directions how to do that? i see the fas boot part, but don't know what i am suppose to be loading.

So, does anyone know of any other way to TEMPORARILY root, aside from Z4root? All I want to do is use Titanium and back up my stuffs before I load a custom ROM.

And will someone also confirm that if I do Clockwork, that I will be able to restore the phone to the stock ROM if necessary, in case I need to exchange it under insurance??

Thanks.
