Tempted to Upgrade

I currently have the Galaxy Note 10.1 (2012) version and now that I have a Galaxy Note 3 I'm horribly tempted to upgrade the tablet vs. wait and see if Samsung ever gives us a software update. For the most part I've worked around sync issues and live with the fact that if I open and edit a note from my tablet on my phone...well it's stuck with the phone from then on. I use my tablet 99% of the time for note taking anyway, but I do use Action Memo on my phone a ton and it would be nice to have those sync'd down to the tablet. I I've sat down and done a pro's and con's list and I can make it weigh out in either favor. What do you all think....save the bucks and hope we get the software upgrade or spend the Christmas bonus on an early gift?

I upgraded from a Asus TF700 to the Note 10.1 (2014). So far I haven't found a bad thing with the device. I wasn't sure how much I was going to use the S pen, but it has grown on me and find myself using it more. I haven't experienced the lag that some people talked about the screen on it is one of the best I have seen.

My guess is it's a touchwiz issue and it will take an OS upgrade from Samsung to correct it. I've spent a whack of time this afternoon reading more reviews and user comments than I care to. After researching as much as I could I'm sticking with my old 10.1 until I see a fix come out for the 2014.

There are a couple of very easy tricks that will eliminate the lag. If you want the Note 10.1 go for it.

Thanks- I find I continue to justify it..., will most likely go for it. Problem: I am not a programer or gifted in the 'tricks' arena- was hoping for US$600 it would be out-of-the-box impressive.

Seems like if Note compatibility is your only issue, consider Lecture Notes. Or hold off a bit and rely on PDFs temporarily. Most likely the 10.1 will get updated, just a matter of when.

The 10.1 is as good as it was before the new model came out.

That said, if a black Friday door buster comes for the 2014 all bets are off!

I'd love to know these "fixes". I'm getting one of these next week. I too have about blinded myself reading and comparing reviews of this and the nexus 10, and am convinced the note is the one for me. Now that I have confirmed my 3 concerns, usb otg host support, mhl hdmi out, and now know the hbogo issue is fixed. I just came back from bestbuy and played with it for a while. It's really gorgeous screen, and very robust s pen functionality is just lovely. I did not really notice the lag issues with the touchwiz ui, but always good to have an arsenal of potential fixes at the ready. Btw, Samsung is having them on sale 11/28 - 12/2 for 499(16gb) and 549(32gb)

One of the fixes is quite simple. Just download Nova launcher from the play store and use it. The stock TouchWiz launcher is a mess and always has been for whatever reason and the same can be said using it back on the Galaxy S3 and S4 phones. Plus with Nova launcher or a couple other launchers that are really nice as well (I don't recommend Go launcher only because they are always after your money pretending to offer you this and that for free....) you can do a lot of very simple customizations such as deciding that you want 9 icons in your dock or that you want 6 columns and 5 rows of icons on each screen. You can even determine how big or small you want the icons to be.

The second fix is a little harder but nothing to it. It involves changing 1 of the animation settings in the developer's settings on the tablet. Maybe someone can post a link to where the instructions are for that fix?

The first note 10.1 was not great to start with. I seem to remember waiting until a particular update (can't remember which one) after which it was very smooth. I have the new note and have to say despite the occasional jerky movement on screen it is excellent. Much better than the original. With the inevitable fix from Samsung I am sure it will do me for a long time.
I use the Spen far more than I ever did on the first note simply because it is much better, but the real wonder is the screen and it's resolution giving the ability to use the multi window capability much more.

WOW! That is amazing.

Personal comment: 'one' of the single most amazing concepts driving Apple and its unbelievable global success is EASE of customer service/ availability and, of course, MARKETING. Conversely, one of Samsung's largest deficits (coming from a fan who would kill for his 8000 series TV) is EASE of customer service/ availability and, of course, MARKETING.

it's a shame that the only thing keeping the 2014 GN10.1 from being an absolute BEAST is Touchwhiz. If this ran pure Android OS, it'd be a powerhouse of a tablet.

That being said, I used Touchwhiz for the first two weeks I owned my Note and it was okay - not laggy enough for me to regret the purchase, but enough for me to notice. I switched to Nova and have been using that for about 3 weeks now and I absolutely love it. It's much smooth and the total RAM being used appears to be lower.

I just watched the video above, and now my tablet feels even faster.

I think folks forget that TouchWiz delivers some features for any impact on performance it may have. Built in complete OTG support as opposed to pure Android's requirement of the $4 Nexus Media Importer, built in system font swapping as opposed to pure Android's requirement of ROOTING the device and then bouncing each and every time you want to swap fonts. TouchWiz is not frivilous bloat but the amalgamation of features that Samsung felt were important to the user experience. With the every growing power of processors and the tweaks you can do to reduce lag I think it's all pretty durned good. Now mind you, I no longer have any Sammy devices, so I'm not just defending what I own, I just have had enough different devices to appreciate what TouchWiz brings to the table.
