I charged my S3 overnight. When I put it on the charger, it was around 30%. This morning, at 100% I took it off the charger and turned off Airplane mode so I could check the weather. Not even 3 minutes and the battery is down to 46%. What happened?

Sounds like a defective battery, what's "using" up your battery? Posting a screenshot of your battery stats would be very helpful

I'm surprised the phone didn't burst into flames during a drop like that. Did you notice the phone getting hot at all?

What were you doing when that drop occurred? It shows that the phone was awake and the screen was on the whole time. Your cellular signal seemed fine, so it wasn't that.

What model/carrier/firmware?

Edit: BTW, never charge the phone before capturing the screenshots - it makes any time-based assessment useless.

I put my phone into Airplane mode to charge it faster. This morning, I wanted to check the weather to see if I needed a jacket or not, so I disabled Airplane mode, turned on all the location settings, and pressed the refresh button on the weather app. By the way, the weather app still didn't update, but my battery drained over 50% in less than 2 minutes. I put it on the charger right after and it was back at 70 after a half hour. Has kept up the battery since, fluctuating between 79% and 80%

Galaxy S3 SGH-I747 I think.
AT&T carrier and 4.1.2 firmware, rooted kernel.

No the phone didn't heat up at all. The screen being on is normal, being as this drop happened instantly within 2 minutes.

Mine got extremely hot when it happened. It might be the kernel you flashed, I noticed youbhad Beats audio on. I was wondering how you got it. So that was the first time? Hopefully it won't happen again

Unless there were a short between the battery terminals it would be pretty much impossible for it to physically drain the battery 50% in two minutes. Since the phone didn't overheat it's unlikely anything like that happened.

Unless the phone is connected to a 500mAh charger it should be able to reach 100% charge even while in use.

Did you load a different kernel? I'd suspect that's where your troubles lie.

All I really did was root it. No weird rom or anything. Just the rooted rom. I'm not sure what you mean by 500mAh charger. I charge it during the day via backpack charger (Powerbag by ful) and at night I charge it via wall outlet, using the cord I received with the phone for bother chargers.

Update:
I did the same thing overnight. Turned on Airplane mode and let it charge. This morning, I simply turned Airplane mode off. No calls, no emails, no weather checks. An hour later, it's down to 41% again. A quick check at the battery says another sharp drop, but an steady, dangerous drain since.

Look closely to the left and you'll see where it dropped. I estimate another 2-3 minute death period.
