Tethering [Confirmed]

I havent heard anything about this at work. It. My guess is, the tether will always remain free, as its part of the software...

Are you corporate or third party? I work at a corporate location and it was posted in the daily news section on RSP about a week or so before the phone released.

Proof that it isnt a free service so please stop spreading that it is. Sprint is aware of this and they WILL be charging for it at some point. When that is I dont know but I dont want everyone feeling as though this is a free service they are entitled to. This is a page from the Playbook issued thru corporate Sprint channels a week prior to the launch. The 2nd issue should answer your questions.

Please don't lump all Sprint employees together; there are some that actually know what they're talking about ;)

Tethering is free as of now, it's not advertised as such, but nonetheless, it's free and ready for you to use. Sprint is working on a solution to this though.

If that's true that they plan to start charging for tethering with the Nexus, they better get on the ball and get 4g tethering to work! it was hard enough to justify paying $30 per month for tethering for the past year as I did with my Evo (at least with that I could tether at 4g speeds), but if they try to charge us for crippled non 4g tethering, they will have some very angry customers.

im under the impression they have no software updates for this phone, so how will they check. all the others use a sprint app to verify they are paying for it.

I don't think they need an app to know that you are tethering. I think that it shows up in their system differently than regular data for your phone.

Yeah, but how hard would it be for sprint to get with google, and tell them they need to block free tethering in the next google update for the Nexus S? We install the google update, and bam! No more free tether. Oh, and we also would need to pay extra, but would only be able to tether at 3G speeds, unless they fix that.

Seems like sprint could easily show google how they have lost x amount of dollars ( potentially in the hundreds of thousands of dollars) due to free wifi tether, and google might go along with it. Then again, most folks who buy phones don't hang out on forums and figure this stuff out, so maybe sprint doesn't care as much as we think they might, and this memo we saw was just to sucker the uninformed. Hell, they suckered me for a few days until I figured it out by reading the forum

I would LOVE to see them try to charge me for using this. It gives you no warning at all additional charges may apply. If they tried to charge people after the fact, they would lose that in court.

That analogy is flawed. Its a same logic that RIAA and MPAA tried to use about pirating movies.

As far as google doing something about it we can take a look at tmobile. Nexus S has been out for a while now and google didn't disable tethering on it. Besides like people said users on the forums who use this are a very very small minority at sprint.

I for one wouldn't pay for this nonsense. I have unlimited data on my account. Others might disagree but I follow that logic. I don't use tethering often but when i need it i use it.

I had wondered about this figured no one has really had the phone long enough to get a bill with the 8th release or I had missed on forum.
Just in case, I had loaded tether .apk from epic to use if needed. It looked like it as working till I needed accurate radar on my computer this weekend while boating for severe weather. .apk didn't connect but remembered this and it did,
Hoped it was free but at this point, didn't care, needed it

I just hope if it changes, sprint has the decency to actually inform us, maybe text to all nexus owners vs 3rd page of fine print on invoice. And if anyone is like me on e I'll, you never get any notification, just a rate change after the fact

You have unlimited data on device and the terms that they and you agreed upon. Tethering without paying is against the TOS. It's what you agreed upon when signing the contract. If you don't get caught then well you don't get caught but then don't complain if they eventually charge you.

I used the hotspot on my nexus s with cincinnat bell and they quickly sent me a text message stating that tethering was not included in my plan. They suspended all my data. I upgraded to the nexus s 4g from sprint and the hotspot works fine on 3g but does not work at all on 4g. After repeated calls to tech support and multiple visits to Sprint stores I was finally advised that the 4g not working on the hotspot is a "known problem" and they are working on a fix that should be out in a couple of months. By the way I am paying the extra $29.95 per month to allow tethering.

I have been tethering on Sprint for about 6-7 years. Going back as far as my SPH-800 Sanyo phone or whatever model it was. This includes Treo 600 and 700 models, and a Palm Pre.

For whatever reason, Sprint doesn't pursue this with customers, at least in my experience.

I think it would depend on your usage. I have a feeling that they would contact you if you were using tens of gigabytes every month. If you keep your tethering at lower volumes, you may not have an issue.

Do u see me complaining?

Don't know about Sprint, but I have used 10+ gigs a month on T-Mobile with my N1 tethering and have had no issues.

Exactly. Plain and simple, your contract limits the data usage to the one device as specified on your contract. Tethering is a violation of your contract. Can they find you out and break/fine/back-charge you for tethering? I dunno... I wouldn't want to be the test case for that, that's for sure.

Just because the phone is capable doesn't mean it's allowed by the contract.
