I don't have the "Use for Internet Connection" when clicking on the wrench either. My tab is not rooted and I have an unrooted Evo 4G running Gingerbread.
You're pressing the wrench on the tab, right?

Yep, pressing the wrench icon on the Samsung Galaxy 10.1 tab.

Same issue. Wrench shows nothing under the EVO 3D versus showing headphone under all headsets.
Phone icon next to EVO 3D.
I have rooted EVO 3D with Barnacle...Barnacle connects to my desktop PC, but does not show on list after scanning/Associate/ scan again etc. on the GT-10.1.
Any suggestions how I can get Barnacle to show up on the GT?
Am I missing something? I can tether all day long with my GT and my HTC Desire.
Are you tethering with the native app that came with the phone/network?
On Verizon there is an a 'Hot Spot' that is included on the phone. It allows tethering via 'access point'. It also costs $30.00 a month.
To avoid paying the monthly subscription fee some users root their phones and use alternative apps such as Wifi-Tether among others. These free versions allow tethering via 'ad-hoc' networks. Android phones/tablets do not recognize an ad-hoc network and therefore can not connect.
I believe that Sprint and T-Mobile allow free wifi tethering not using ad-hoc networks.
I'm using Wifi tether. I have an HTC Desire (CDMA) on Cellular South w/stock 2.2, and I use Z4 root. Z4 allows for temporary root (until reboot). Anyway, I run the temp root and then start Wifi tether (V 2.0.7). Tablet locks on without prompting.
No hot spot service, no custom rom, nothing special. SSID shows up as "Android Device" or something like that. My Tab is 100% stock. I do have a couple of side-loaded apps, but nothing that would effect tethering one way or the other.
Edit - Forgot to mention, tethering is definitely not carrier approved. In fact I don't think that they even offer it.
Has anyone tried the PDAnet for tablets?

If your Tab is rooted, you can solve the ad-hoc issue in a few steps:
1. Put your Tab into airplane mode
2. Download this file
3. Using a root file explorer, navigate to /system/bin and rename the "wpa_supplicant" file to "wpa_supplicant.bak"
4. Extract the new "wpa_supplicant" from the zip and move it into /system/bin
5. Reboot, and enjoy your ad-hoc tether![]()
PDANet allows you to use your stock phone and tab, no rooting required. It works via bluetooth so it only works for the connected device, maybe not quite as good as a hotspot (at least for my wife with her Ipad, lol) but good enough for what I wanted to do.
I started using this right after the promo for the Thunderbolt hotspot ended. So far this has worked flawlessly for me and the setup was easy, just download PDANet for each device, launch the phone first then the tab and just follow the onscreen instructions. I've only had it disconnect once so far, but I just had to click the icon in the tray and it started right back up.
As a quick note, it will still say no internet connection in the tray of the tab since you are connecting via BT, but just ignore that, everything seems to work anyway.
