Late to the game and pressed for time, but I finally have something worth tethering on Verizon (N7). I understand VZW is prohibited by the FCC from interfering with unauthorized tethering but looks like they still think their app is a precious commodity.

What are the best wireless apps for rooted users? I'm assuming it's no longer necessary to use a proxy server to hide usage from the carrier, correct?

If you are rooted, you can just turn on the wifi hotspot. For non-rooted users, FoxFi has always worked.

I tried that first but it doesn't work. First there's a message saying that it's checking subscription status, then another saying I have to sign up for $30/month.

Rooted, running stock 4.0.4.

I installed the Bugless Beast ROM and it comes with Android WiFi Tether built-in and, supposedly, Verizon's lock on/tracking of tethering left out. You can tether by downloading Android WiFi Tether from Google Play but Verizon will still know and may charge you or drop your contract. Good article explaining the situation, here:

If you are getting that message, download FoxFi from the play store. Sounds like you are running the stock ROM.
