Tethering with the Evo 3D

This discussion seems to be focussed on WiFi tethering, which requires root access. What about the USB and/or Bluetooth tethering options that work without rooting on other Android phones, can someone confirm whether these solutions work on the Evo 3D or not?

PDANet
EasyTether

I just installed the trial version of pdanet on my mac...ran a speedtest with 1 bar on the 4G only and got 5.48mbps download and 800kbps upload

I can confirm that PDAnet works fine on the EVO 3D. Bluetooth is limited to theoretical 1Mbs which is pretty slow for an internet data rate.

WiFi tethering requires the use of the built in wifi tethering app and payment of the $30 fee to use it.

Question: what is the $30 app I need for WiFi tethering?

It's Sprints already built in wifi tether program...and it's not just a $30 app unfortunately, it's $30/month as a subscription, although I believe you can go in and add/remove it on a daily basis from your account, so you can activate only when you need for roughly a dollar a day.

Have been using EasyTether Pro since my original EVO 4G and no problems with it working on the 3D! If you don't mind the USB cable to connect, I highly recommend it! My router died about 2 months ago and I've been using 4G exclusively as my home internet connection. I average about 10 mb/s!!!

I just used PDAnet on my Macbook Pro and Sprint's 4G, and this is awesome! I always carry a microUSB cable in my laptop bag, so this is perfect.

Here's my Speedtest Results I did on my laptop using the USB tethering:

Also, it feels like my 4G speeds are faster on my 3D than on my OG EVO. I think I'm about to cancel my pathetic DSL line soon!

Bummer, I use the hotspot already -- it's my only internet connection at home. I love it, but I was looking for cheaper :)

FREE? Who gets a data plan for free? and from $print? I pay $99 a month for unlimited data, picture mail and text messaging.. So I don't feel like I am cheating anyone out of money when using a rooted phone to wireless tether my iPad.. Pay an extra $30 a month when I'm already paying that and more for data? Screw that!

Oh, and when I bought the phone yesterday,, they up'd my monthly bill by $10 for the 4G service.. So to me, I'm using what I paid for is all..

You may want to review all of your posts and consider implementing a 24 hour "consideration and review" period before putting some of you thought into print. :)

People looking for fast unlimited tethering for free are the very reason why limits are set by the carriers and ends up not being limited nor free.

If this is an important feature for you, spend the money to actually buy the function. if you rely on it solely you are helping to screw the rest of us down the line when it gets abused

This response is so condescending it is not even funny. People that pay for unlimited plans should be able to use their 'unlimited' plans anyway they want. The only phone that offers free tethering (wireless) is the Nexus S (4g). So, you can (happily?) pay the $30 a month or you can get a Nexus S 4g.

Personally, I was struggling to decide on which phone to get. The Evo 3d has the power and the whole 3d thing, but I went with the Nexus. Not only is the 3d effect uncomfortable, but having free tethering out of the box (without rooting) was important to me. Besides, the Nexus is extremely quick, has video chat on gtalk, and is the most up to date with Android OS. By the way, the video on gtalk is much better than video calling on Skype. In regards to tethering v. 3d, to be fair, I rarely use the tethering, but it is still more useful than the 3d effect.

By the way, the battery life of the Nexus seems much better than my original Evo 4g. In the end, both phones are good, I really like the hardware benifits on the Evo 3d, but I also like the software benefits of the Nexus S 4g. If tethering is something you may want and do not want to pay $30 a month or do not want to deal with rooting your phone, or if the latest software fromm Google is important, then the Nexus is for you. On the other hand, if raw power, 3d, and Sense UI is important to you, then Evo 3d is your phone. Either way, choice in this situation is good and that is why we choose Android over Apple.

On a side note, the Nexus 'Prime' will probably be the best combination of the two.

I don't know what makes you so stupid, but it really works!

Ok...I'm seriously confused here.

I just got the 3D about a week ago, hooked it up to my PC via USB, chose the USB tethering option that came up, waited for the driver to auto install, clicked on the local access network that appeared...and viola...internet in all its glory!!

Did Sprint make it free? How come I can easily tether wherever and whenever I want now? I checked my bill and it doesn't show and I did not order it...just have the all data plan like everyone else here.

Am I being unknowingly billed as I write this? This option was never mentioned...found it by accident just messing around.

Thoughts?

And yes, this is a stock 3D thats never been rooted.

USB tethering is free. WiFi is not.

No it isn't. It is only included in the hotspot service. Try it and see. You will get an error.

Um...I did...no error...am typing this via my working FREE usb tethering...hard to argue with hard facts :P

Again...I did NOT order the hotspot service...read my post up above.

Hmm... my bad. I was under the assumption it was free.

So if I use PDAnet hooked up to my laptop via USB and tether that way, that's basically cheating the system? Oops...

I haven't used it for more than just a couple minutes a few times, but yeah.

It is sad that people try to justify their data plan for tethering. I rooted previous phones but i never really tethered with it, because I have no need for it. If you are tethring to use it as internet access at home or at business, I say you pay for it. If you are going to use it as an emergency need then there is no point paying for it, just use the usb tether or root it.

It is always tempting to get everything for free, yes you are paying for unlimited data but that is only for your device. People might not realize that it is not the data cost, it is maintaining the network that takes bank. Verizon is pulling the plug on unlimited because it costs them billions of dollars to maintain their network and thanks to peopel abusing the unlimited data that unlimited data is gone with them.

I say if u are going to use the hotspot feature frequently and cut your bill at home or business then why not pay 30 bucks. Atleast it is unlimited hotspot feature, not 2gb like att. I think sprint is doing right by their customers, if you are going to charge 30 for hotspot, they should give unlimited. I hate att, I would never pay for their hotspot plan. I mean it is only a mater of time before you run out of 2gb if you are using hotspot features for multiple devices.

I am moving out soon and I will probably not get cable and just use the hotspot since I have pretty good 4g coverage in the area I live in. I dont need xtreme speeds, but I need around 3-5 mb to be able to stream a few things.

I think it is only fair to pay for something you should pay for. Whehter someone likes it or not, it does cost sprint. If you think data is free on a cell network and it doesn't cost them crap, just ask verizon and Att, or go read about it. It is not a text message.

If you are not using at as primary internet device for your computer then by all means thether with it. It only creates problems when people start abusing it. I remember seeing someone using over 140gb on verizon LTE in 2 weeks and bragging about it. You can thank those few that blame the system for everything. Like somone said, nothing is free in life.
