Tethering?

I know there are no stupid questions only stupid people, but I'm going to ask anyway. Any chance that we'd be able to eventually use a tethering app to a mobile phone to get on line? I use my android phone from time to time with EasyTether on my laptop when I'm away from WiFi. It's a hardwire but it works well especially when I'm near 4G

It would be nice if there were some sort of solution for the N7 to do this.

Root and install wifi tether on your phone. I did this on my S2. Works like a charm. I used google nav on the N7 on the way home from Gamestop to test it out.

I was just using my phone to tether for a few hours because I forgot my wifi password. It works but it's pretty slow since I only have 3g on my cell. I rooted my phone and I use the hotspot toggle app from the market to get free hotspot. Unless you have 4g or something, you probably won't want to stream netflix or download big files.

My GSIII has a bluetooth Tethering. Will this work with the Nexus 7? I'd rather not root my phone as I does everything else I need from it.

I've used wifi tether from my GN to my N7 without any issue. No rooting required for the GN to tether.

Tried out the Elixir 2 widget last night on my locked unrooted Verizon GNex. Worked like a charm.

I would love to tether when I can't access WiFi, but I heard carriers will eventually find out that you are tethering and charge you. Does anyone know about this for sure ?????

FYI: my carrier is at&t and my current phone is HTC One X.

I have Sprint, they are supposed to be unlimited data (for now anyway, I bet this will change soon) and if you want to use your phone as a wireless hotspot they want to charge something like 30 bucks extra a month. With the app easytether (link in my first post) which only cost around 10 bucks, I can get on line with my phone wired to my laptop via the USB ports no problem. No need to root the phone but I did have to load an app on my laptop. The 3G works okay for web stuff but it's much better when I'm in a 4G area. I'm not sure about AT&T though, I think they have limits on the plans.

You can root and tether without any additional charges.

Yes, it uses your plan's data.

Is there a benefit took using a root tethering app versus the tethering setting (Wi-Fi hotspot) that's already included in the custom ROM?

I have Verizon with unlimited data. I use tethering from time to time when needed and havent had any issues. This is just general web use, not downloading large files. Using a GN I don't see how they would know for sure without any of the bloatware. They can make assumptions but I would argue that the burden of proof is on them to show you were tethering, but perhaps they can do whatever they want.

I don't believe Android has drivers to get data from bluetooth, sorry.

Does this use data?

Navigation only uses data when starting to set up the route, or when rerouting.

They'll usually give you a warning, but they can then do what they want.
