Is it possible to enable the "Portable Wi-Fi Hotspot" feature under Settings > Mobile Network Sharing without rooting the device?

I imagine a discussion about circumventing carrier tethering charges will get closed, but generally speaking, you can't do it not rooted.

Also know that doing so is a violation of service so they can cut you off if they figure it out. I've heard of plenty of people who never had an issue and others who lost service pretty quickly after non contract tethering. I'm not saying don't do it, just be smart about how much data you use and such.

I guess this is a moot point for me because I don't plan on rooting the phone.

I have at&t and tethering works if you have certain plans (datashare or 5gb data pro)

Am I missing something? That feature is enabled for me. I am on the three network in Ireland and I use tethering all the time. I have free unlimited data plan so I tether my laptop to my htc one. Is this illegal in the US? I know that in my terms and conditions it says no tethering allowed but the option is there in the menu and my phone is not rooted. How can they even tell if your tethering. Obviously If you use crazy data downloading movies etc but otherwise using normal amounts of data how can they even find out?

Carriers in the United States like to milk you of every dollar, including tethering. I have an unlimited data plan and it does not include tethering.

I have an unlimited data plan as well but Sprint charges extra for tethering so if you want to use your phone as a wifi hotspot it's an additional $19.99 for 2GB of data or $49.99 for 6GB. I'm not sure if/what the other big 3 U.S. carriers charge for this feature.

Wow we are lucky over here so. When I said to they guy in the Three store what I intended to do he said just don't draw attention to myself by downloading more than 30GB a month. That is very generous amount. I used to have a usb modem for my laptop that was costing me 29? per month but I don't need that anymore and I cancelled it so I use my HTC one as a modem full time. Never have a problem. The phone gets warm of course and I'm only getting Hdspa speeds as we have no LTE over here but apart from that I am tethering to my hearts content.

My monthly bill starts on the 2nd and in 4 days I've tethered 12Gb of data on my mac book along with another 4gb on my phone. I've even got rid of my home wireless that was costing me 30? a month. Really can't believe US networks block out tethering. Madness.

Tethering was not included on the at&t individual plan w/ 3gb and i called and they said the 5gb plan was required. Then I switched to a datashare plan when my wife moved to at&t and tethering is included on all the datahare plans.

In principal, only ATT branded phones will not let you tether for free on ATT. Nexus 4 or any international version of phone should work.

Wow, I really miss the app FreeTether on my Pre, thanks to the fantastic webOS homebrew community. Quite the disappointment to not just turn on the built-in app and have it work.
