Text app keeps showing new message

Using the stock texting app, there is almost always a new message showing on the app icon, but when I check, it's the same old messages I've already read. I tried clearing the app cache, but no luck. Any ideas? BTW, on Verizon

Stock everything. Sometimes it shows one new message, sometimes it counts every addition to the "thread". Am I supposed to be deleting entire conversations, or does it matter?

After MM update I had issues with the stock texting app also. The worst was it played some lg ringtone even though it showed all of the the correct ringtones; also had other minor issues. Could not fix; checked app permissions, cleared cache etc. My solution was to use Textra; have zero problems now.

Disable the stock texting app and get one of the 5 top texting apps in the play store. You won't regret it!

Use Textra never had a issue since changing

It also fixed the annoying -8 thing and Pink music symbol junk happening too

Nope you shouldn't as Textra replaces stock it will read the texts from memory
