Text displaying as blocks/squares - Galaxy S4

My parents and I each have the same phone, bought at the same time. For some reason my phone is the only one not screwed up. The latest screwy thing is on my mother's phone. Text throughout her phone are showing up as solid rectangles or squares.

I have also noticed that when her screen goes dark, I can turn it back on quickly and I am at her home screen and not to the lock screen which she has set up.

Welcome to Android Central! The blocks and squares is a relatively common glitch mentioned on these forums. It usually goes away after a reboot, or after a cache partition wipe: http://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-5744

If her phone is set to lock after a certain interval after the screen sleeps, then you can still wake it to the homescreen instead of the lockscreen within that interval. Go to Settings>Lock Screen>Lock Automatically​, and adjust the interval there.
