Text message from just one contact only keeps dissapearing

My buddy at work who also has an S8+ usually always have a message thread going between us. His messages always seems to dissappear from my list of open threads in the stock messaging app. He never has this problem with me. Sometimes when it goes away I can start a new message type his name In the "To" area and our entire message history comes up again.

I've cleared the phone cache, app cache, and nothing seems to work. I can't find any setting that would do something like this. Anyone have any ideas?

I've tried textra and I love it but with that same friend and anyone on att the advanced messaging messes with me i have problems receiving their texts. I'm not sure If textra has updated their app to address this.
