This problem has just started and my OCD is driving me crazy trying to figure it out. For the last year or so everytime I would get a text message the preview would pop up and go away if I didn't choose to view it or close it. Then there would be a envelope symbol on the banner indicating I have an unread text. Now all of a sudden the same thing happens except that the envelope indicator only shows while the pop up window comes on. Then it disappears at the same time as the pop up. So if I unlock my phone I no longer have any indication that I have a missed text unless I go to my home screen and look at the message icon at the bottom of my phone. This is also happening with missed calls. Any ideas?

the only other thing i noticed is when I restarted my phone a message popped up from the bottom of my phone saying "failed to download attachment from multimedia message. Try again later"

You weren't getting that attachment download failure message before?

If it's working normally in Safe Mode, that suggests that something you installed is causing the issue. The next thing I'd try is an app cache wipe, in case some temporary app data is causing a glitch. Go to Settings>Storage, tap Cached Data, and then agree to clear it. If the problem still persists, then try a system cache partition wipe, which is different from the app cache wipe. https://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-21095

If the problem still persists, then you might have to uninstall apps one by one until the problem goes away. I'd start with any 3rd party apps that tinker with the system, like Clean Master (a very common culprit for various problems).

I did the app cache wipe. Also the attachment download failure message i want to say just started when this problem started. Maybe there is a pic or something that didn't come through on a text. I deleted a thread from my wife and other family members that we have sent alot of pics through but after I restarted it the same message came up. here is a pic of it. And i still having the same issue. I will need to try your suggestion on the cache partition wipe later. Does that have any effect on the phone? Screenshot_20160912-173413.jpg

Wiping the cache partition doesn't affect your personal data--it's all temporary system data.

If you're able to, try deleting all of your message threads.

Well I did the partition cache. The first text I got it worked the way it was supposed to. I then had my wife send me a text and it went back to the same problem. So frustrating. I guess I'm going to delete all my texts and I will report back in the am. Thanks for all your help.

Well I deleted all my messages and the "failed to download multimedia" message has gone away but unfortunately my original problem still exists..

Might be time to start uninstalling apps one by one, to see if you can narrow down the culprit.

well It's fixed! After I removed my Buffalo Bills app it started working. i reinstalled the app and its still working. Thanks a bunch for your help!!
