Text messages have disappeared after Facebook Messenger error

Text messages have disappeared - all of them?

I had an error on my phone that said something about the messenger app has stopped working and a few other apps had stopped working. I tapped ok, tapped ok but it seemed to just be in a bad loop. I ended up turning off the phone and turning it back on. When I did all of my text messages were gone. I have a droid maxx and i had somehow recently moved the messaging to facebook messanger.

How can I recover these messages?

What happens if you disable facebook Messenger as your SMS app, do the messages appear elsewhere?
