Text Messages in notification bar

Forgive me if this has been covered but I can't quite figure out the search terms to get the info. Also I'm not sure if this is Android or Phone related so I'm putting it here

When I receive a text message and unlock the phone I am automatically shown the message (which is fine). I read message, back out of SMS app and then lock phone but when I unlock the phone again I'm shown the same text message like it's new. It's like the message isn't being marked as read. This is with the default SMS app and GO SMS. Im having to pull down from the top bar and hit clear so the message notification goes away. Is that the way it's supposed to work?

You need to disable the default SMS app (MESSAGING) from using notifications. Open Messaging up, hit the MENU-SETTINGS and uncheck NOTIFICATIONS.

Then you will just get your handcent notification, which will clear when you close the popup.
