Had my hero about a week and love it. I was wondering, i can get ringtones off the market for the ringtone but how do u make it a ringtone for texts?

Put ur ringtone in the notification folder

...also there is an app called mabilo ringtones for free ringtones

Try Rings Extended, it's in the market it allows you to choose where you get you notification sounds from, like music, ringtones or notifications.

I use myxer for my ringtones. With it you can also make your own ring tones on the computer and it sends them to your phone.
