Text Notification

My old Galaxy S Droid phone would "turn on" and show that I have received a text message. This phone doesn't seem to that, so I have to wake up my phone every now and then to check and see if I have received any messages. Is there a way to get the HTC First to do this?

Check through the messaging app notification settings - this could also be a limitation with the app itself. Use the app suggested by B. Diddy or consider a third-party messaging app, such as Handcent, Chomp, Go SMS, etc. with better customization options.
