Since the ringer on my phone is so low I can't hear a text message when I get one at work. I work in a warehouse and it's kinda loud in there. Is there a way to have the screen light up when someone texts me like on the iPhones?

Handcent SMS, available in the market (free). Settings to do exactly what you ask for.

Thanks for the heads up. I installed it and it works great. The only problem is now I have to check the messages in 2 places. Is there a way to turn the origional text message off so I won't have to do this?

Yes, open the original message app and turn off notifications and you're fixed.
