Texting App

Which ones have a private box besides Go sms pro?

I'd also like an answer to this question ^^

The private box on GO SMS Pro is actually pretty impressive. It has the following features that I haven't found elsewhere:

  • hide the path to access the private box
  • block access with pattern or code
  • change private contact notifications (sound, vibration, notification bar icon, notification bar text, whether message text displays in notification bar, etc)

It is easily the best way I've found to secure texts from prying eyes. Having said that, GO SMS Pro itself is heavy/sluggish, and their updates are terrible (they just keep breaking stuff, adding bloat, fixing stuff that doesn't need fixing, etc - I'm actually using an older version, intentionally.)

I'm searching for another sms app that features a similar private box, but I haven't found one yet. Any suggestions?

I'm currently trying Simply Text/Mighty text. I like it because is syncs with my computer, and I can text from the computer. Synchronizing has been pretty reliable so far.

I was using the VZ messenger but it was flaky- sometimes not synching all messages on either the PC or the phone, and the PC app crashed a lot. I also can not stand software which locks in a window size and don't allow you to change it. VZ messages also used that ugly Windows 8 flat looking throwback to Windows 3.1 theme.

My only complaint about the mighty text/simply text apps is not that you have to pay to unlock ALL the features, but that they want you to pay monthly. After using it for the last couple weeks, I'd happily pay $30 for the full feature version but I refuse to pay $3 a month.

For me it's not being able to customize with the stock app. I can't even set different ring tones for each contact that I text.

Just curious what app do you guys use for texting? I'm soon getting a Note 4 and interested in maybe trying a different app. I've been using textra almost since the day after i got my S3. I wasn't a fan of the stock messaging app, so i got textra and I love it. Has a lot of the features I look for but i am always up for trying something different with a new phone. Also has the stock messaging app gotten any better?

I actually like GO SMS PRO better than anything else, but it is slow and drains the battery with all of the cool graphics and themes. I ended up going back to Textra because of how much faster and more efficient it is. No bells and whistles, but definitely a better functioning app all around.

That's a fair point... I love the note 4 but coming from s4 which I could change message tones etc for each user it is a little annoying I can't with the note but Pro's & Cons

The main reason for me is emojis. Love them but can't use them with the standard messaging app.

I can use them. I use SwiftKey and it comes with emojis and uses emojis. The emoji support was added in KitKat.

I use Textra. It's simple, has some customizations I like, and quick. I wanted to use Google Messenger, but I noticed sometimes I wouldn't get texts that were sent for some reason. Not all texts, and not just specific senders - no real pattern for which texts didn't make it through. That was a couple months back though, so I may try Google messenger again.

Didn't know that... trying that now

If it works, would you please elaborate. What extra field do you add and how does it tie in with unique ringtones for various contacts? Thanks.

In the contacts. Edit the contact, choose to add an extra field and make it a message tone and choose which one you want for that specific contact.
