The stock Messages app does not automatically delete old messages by default. I was having these same freezing issues until I went into Settings and checked "Delete old messages" and set max to 250. Reboot phone and you should be good to go. You may have to delete some convos if they're already your set max. Hope this helps!!

That fixed it! Woohoo! I had 2388 messages to just my girlfriend alone.....lol. I set it at 200, and it's flying now.
