Texting lag

I've been having serious lag issues with the messaging app for about the past week. If sending multiple texts in the same thread, there's about a 5-10 second lag before the first message starts to send, then the keyboard freezes up for a good 30 seconds. I at first thought it may be the keyboard I'm using (Jelly Bean) so I checked for updates, cleared the cache, nothing. Even went as far to clear all data from the app. Then I cleared the messaging cache, still nothing. Did a bit of googling, someone recommended clearing the system cache, did that too. I found that pulling the battery for 5-10 minutes helped, but only for a few minutes. Does anyone have any idea why I'm experiencing such a lag/have any other ideas? I still think it has something to do with the messaging app itself, since using the stock Samsung keyboard produced the same issue and there's no issue when using facebook, firefox, etc.

I'd second the 'carrier' vote.
What carrier are you with?
How many bars on your cellular signal?

Verizon. The signal varies, but I've been having the problem regardless of signal strength

Facebook and the other apps that you mention all rely on your data connection (either Wi-Fi or mobile data, whichever you happen to utilize); SMS relies on your cellular signal. If you have a lousy cellular signal (one or two bars) that could be the cause of your messaging issues.

I'm also on Verizon, and using the stock Messaging app (albeit with SwiftKey keyboard) and have had no SMS issues of late, but I also generally have 4 bars. You can take a look at this screen

to get an idea of what your cellular signal is like (dark green is good).

EXACT same issue. For the last week. Except that I am with Sprint. Happens EVERY time I try to text (regardless of signal strength). Happens with both Swype and Samsung keyboards. Clearing cache does not improve performance.

How many apps are running in your background? Maybe you are at a constant limit of 90% or above, thus causing lag.

bnewt,
How about making a backup of your SMS/MMS (the Kies software on your PC is the best bet) and then clearing data in the Messaging app. If this fixes your problem then you need to do some cleanup of your messages after you restore them.

You said it happens regardless of cellular signal strength - do you have a similar dark green rating in that battery view?

I didn't realize that battery history screen even existed - it took me a second to find it (long press the battery graph). Mobile network is dark green.

Current test involves closing all of my Chrome windows. I typically have 8 or more at a time. Note, my Chrome window usage is typical behaviour - nothing about it has changed to suddenly cause the keyboard lag issue. But initial results are looking good, so possibly a recent Chrome update?
