I tried installing textra so I can get unique notification sounds when receiving a text message from a unique contact. Textra unique notifications for contacts does not work and now when I go to messages on my home screen it shows a popup message asking to if I want to make samsung message app as my default. What is going on here?

Well, if you installed Textra and set that as your default (which it needs to be in order to get proper access to the messages database), you WILL get that message on the stock app (or any other messaging app) if you want to use it. If it's not the default, it will not be able to fully access your messages, especially MMS.

Not sure why individual thread ringtones wouldn't work, they seem to be fine on mine. Also, I was under the impression that the messages app from Samsung was already updated to add back support for those...

You have to choose one or the other as the "default" messaging app. Textra should have prompted you to make it the default app when you first launched it.

It sounds like you might have made Textra the default and now Samsung Messages is giving you the prompt to make it the default app when you open it.

Only one of them can be the default app.
