Just like many of you I'm really looking forward to getting the GNEX on VZW. I dumping Sprint and hopping on that DoubeData bandwagon (that's a different story for a different time though) . . .

My next phone MUST have an NFC chip in it because I know its about to take off and I want to be future proof. The thing is though Even though the GNEX has an NFC chip, Verizon hasn't gotten it's service off the ground yet. Haven't heard anything about ISIS in a while. Unlike Google Wallet that i'm starting to see every where.

Is there any new word or leaks about what VZW plans on doing with the NFC Chip or their plans for NFC In general because I'm worried the Chip will go without a proper ecosystem to use it properly.

Google Wallet may be tied in with the carrier, but general NFC functions aren't carrier-dependent. Android Beam isn't controlled by Verizon, for example.

This is true. There are so many applications for NFC capability. Starbucks is testing it in some markets I think I heard a while ago. It's just a matter of time until more businesses jump on the bandwagon.

Google Wallet is tied with carrier? Why? If a feature needs carrier's approval, it usually means this carrier needs to provide extra service necessary for this feature to work. Verizon is not doing anything extra than providing a network for Google to perform transactions. If Verizon is trying to take a cut, it can do nothing besides blocking Wallet's traffic, which would be a terrible thing to do.

That's cool and all but once you start dealing with Merchants and Bank/CCards then there's going to be a roadblock because you need the Service/ecosystem for things like that to happen like ISIS and Google Wallet since these card companies don't do things on their own.

I'm looking forward to all the new applications that will come to the market because of NFC but without an ecosystem in place like Google Wallet it's not going to have a "Cohesive" development.... I'm worried about that.

Verizon may have a deal with isis, but they also have a deal with microsoft that makes bing the "official" search engine of verizon. Verizon makes an exception for droids and bing, so who's to say they will not make an exception for the nexus and google wallet?

nfc isnt about to take off. its by far the most useless feature on the phone.

Perhaps for the immediate usage you are correct, but in the long term I disagree. I am with the OP in thinking that NFC is about to take off. There are so many applications for NFC that will come in the future. It only takes an idea.

I bet VZW has its engineers and folks hard at work to find a way to put that under their control.

When I do a Google Wallet search I get 1,582 places in my zip code that accept NFC via Google wallet. I plan to use it.

Their over controlling attitude is a costly and pointless approach.

I don't care if they block NFC, they just won't let google give users the google wallet code. We'll just get it outselves through root.
