The AC editors have a Pixel and Pixel XL — ask us about them!

Have any of you had any issues with Blue tooth in your car? I saw a thread where it seems to be mostly Chevy, but maybe others are having problems.

I drive a Mazda and the phone and car aren't getting along. I got it connected initially after a few tries, then it wouldn't connect this morning; got an "unknown error" message from the car. I restarted the phone and then it connected but randomly disconnected/reconnected. I came from an S6 which usually worked nicely so it's frustrating. Not sure whether it's the phone, car, or both.

Coming from S6 and minor things, but:
1. Can I use a different image for lock screen vs home screen backgrounds?
2. How can I set contact-specific text sounds? Had this on my S6 and really like this capability.
3. Can home screen date/time be customized at all? No way to get rid of the swipe tab over to the google page?
4. How to put the actual battery percentage in the notification bar?
5. How to get back the visual voicemail? Not included in any of the Verizon apps that loaded.
6. Any tips to get bluetooth in car to connect and stay connected?

Still deciding on this vs going back for the S7....

I got 1, 2, 5 resolved and 6 seems better now than it was yesterday; maybe car and phone just needed to get acquainted. Would love answers to 3 and 4.

Don't sound like Google phone is as nice to operate as a Samsung.
And with Google being new, not enough people to help.

I believe the Google tab and weather widget are not removable. However, you can use a different launcher and get the look you want. I like Action Launcher, but man folks like Nova as well.

As for the battery percentage, I imagine that you can add it by configuring developer settings and changing it there. You could on the 6P, but the number was so small it was not really worth it. AC has a post about it on the 6P and 5X, so do search on the site and you'll probably find the details.

How is everybody liking the Pixel XL compared to the Note 7
As far as the back key, water proof, and charging pad loss.

...

It's a minor detail but one that I will point out anyway:

The "weather widget" appears only if you have weather turned on in Google Now. From the Home screen, swipe right to go to Google Now -> tap the hamburger menu at top left -> tap Customize -> tap Everything else -> turn on or off "Interested in weather updates for your location" and, if interested, "Interested in weather updates for work". Also (I guess), "Continue to get weather updates" on.

Next, go back to Google Now and scroll down to find the weather block. Tap on it and, at the top of the new window, youu should see "Access weather instantly from your Home screen: No Thanks / Add" Tap Add and voila!

Now you see the weather widget at the top-right of the Home screen; if you turn it off, you see today's date on two lines, large font "October 27", small font "Thursday, 2016" below.

It took me awhile to figure all this out - I kept seeing screenshots that showed the weather widget and didn't understand why I only saw the date. :)

Seeing as I have had nothing but a Samsung in my hand for at least 3 yrs since I had Iphone's.
I am used to water proof, the Back button, The wireless charging. and things.
the Pixel XL seems to be as expensive but lacks some of the things the Samsung does.

Think I would have to get one in my hands.
The more I read the more I seem to not seeing everybody with one really opening up.

It's definitely a big change in experience. You'll be fine with the back button being on the other side, though ;)

can you interact with notifications on the "moto dispaly/ambient screen" looking feature ?

Not like Moto Display ... you can just tap on it and the screen comes on for you to interact with it just like it's a normal lock screen notification.

whats your favourite feature/aspect of the phone? and what is the battery life like in real world usage? sorry if these questions have been asked before, this is a pretty big thread

I like the cohesive feel and extreme speed of the phone. The individual features are nice, but it's great to have a phone that works amazingly quickly all the time.

Battery life on the XL is good — finish the day with normal usage with 20-30% left in the tank. The standard Pixel obviously isn't as good in terms of battery life, I end the same kind of day with 10-20% left instead.

How wet can you get it before it's ruined?

Not very wet. Use it in the rain if you need, but don't let it sit in any water, and don't take it in the sauna with you :)

Thanks for the great review. My questions is: The shade at the bottom seems to take away from the screen size. How annoying is that and is there any way to change that/take it away.

The "shade" ... ? You mean the navigation bar with the nav buttons? You can't hide it unless you're using a full-screen app like a game or the camera; then the buttons disappear and you can make them come back with a swipe up from the bottom edge.

I'm curious about the performance of the Snapdragon 821 compared to the 820. Incremental or significant improvement?

Tough to say because there's far more to performance than just the CPU. We don't have the "same" phone both with a 821 and 820 to set side-by-side and compare performance. Google's clearly done a LOT of performance tweaking in the software on the Pixels, and I think that'd stand out even if they weren't using an 821 to power the phones.

Any concern with the glass on the back getting scratched by the camera lens?

The glass gets scratched, for sure. I suppose that means that the lens would be susceptible as well ... though I don't think the Pixels are that much more at risk than the lens on any other smartphone camera.

So I have a bunch of quick charge 2.0 charging blocks left from my turbo. Can I still use them safely with the pixel? Obviously they won't charge as fast, but are they ok to use?

Yup you can use them safely. The Pixels don't support Qualcomm's Quick Charge in any form, so you'll just get the bare USB charging speeds, but nothing bad will happen :)

How responsive is it compared to the Nexus 5x?

The Pixels are notably more responsive than any other phone I've used, including the Nexus 5X.

Now that you've had the phone for a bit, what would you change about it? Battery life? Camera? Waterproofing?

Battery life = read reply above

Camera = still excellent

Waterproofing = wish it had it

Does anyone know if the "Really Blue" will be offered again? Or was it a limited introductory special?

Yup, it came back in stock on the Google Store today, actually.

Sorry if I missed this in another thread, but why is the Daydream Viewer only compatible with these Pixel phones? Isn't it just a glorified Cardboard?
And if it's due to the controllers, then what is it specifically about them that other phones can't work with them?
Thanks anyone!

It's only available for the Pixels because the Pixels are the only phones with Android 7.1 that includes the Daydream software and the certification to use Daydream. Other future phones that meet the Daydream cert and have 7.1 will be equally compatible with Daydream View and future Daydream headsets.

Andrew could you tell us how good is the pixel in Google Maps? Mainly the compass and the GPS. Is the compass perfectly accurate or sometimes is some degrees off?

Seems to work just fine here. I'm not pulling up compass apps to get my exact heading ... but Maps and other apps that use location seem to know where I am just fine.

1. For the stock launcher and configuration, the wallpaper you set is the one you get on both the lock and home screen — google doesn't differentiate. (I personally appreciate this ... I never want a different image on the lock screen. To each their own, though!)
2. As far as I can tell, you can't do that in the stock Messenger / Contacts apps on the Pixels.
3. Home screen date and time as in the status bar time and the date/weather on the top-right of the home screen? Nope, you only options there are to switch between 12/24 hour clock (like all phones) in the status bar, and the choice to turn off weather in Google Now in order to turn off the weather view on the home screen. That doesn't save you any space, though, because that widget is not removable. You also can't remove the Google tab ... that's part of the launcher.
3a. Of course, you can just choose to use a different launcher and all of that goes away. That's why Android is so great :)
4. You can't.
5. You should be able to just download the Verizon voicemail app. In my experience the main dialer had visual voicemail baked into it, too, though.
6. Out of my wheelhouse. I don't really drive, and when I do, Bluetooth isn't involved :)

I'm not worried about the back glass panel or the camera lens getting scratched because I've got my Very Silver Pixel XL in a Spigen case.

Honestly, this phone is so slippery when naked that I would never consider using it for any length of time without a suitable, slip resistant, case.

Settings -> Storage -> Cached Data

A dialogue will launch letting you know that continuing will clear the cache.
