The bottom chin

It's great because I can grip the phone there without activating the touch screen and navigation buttons.

Because they used the same design as the HTC 10 which has front facing speakers where the chin is. Who knows why they didn't keep the front speakers for the Pixel.

You got a point there, yes while gaming those chin might be great for handling the phone

Yeah I'm sure the speaker is there but why there's only a single speaker on a space that huge ?

Could be for the VR head set. A place for it to grip so it isn't touching the screen

If the chin makes the screen fit into the middle of the VR headset, then its somewhat make sense.

But if the phone is not being use with the VR headset then the chin looks like a waste of space

In my opinion at least

I have had every recent Samsung and while I agree that the bezel-less edge screen is great to look at, I think the industry in general has gotten way too carried away with smartphone screens and their size. Full HD is more than enough for the naked eye, and bezels all around improve usability i.e., having a place to grip the phone without worrying. I hate that most recent smartphones feel like a bar of soap. Just hate it.

While it does seem like a waste of space, it's not the end of the world. Chin up!
