The day is here for s-off from AlphRev

Any word if this will affect the Gingerbread update coming?

I do believe if you are completely stock you can get the update, but the update will switch the s-off back to s-on. There will be a ruu of the update that dev's can port for rooted devices.

Read the whole XDA thread, followed the instructions, and now I am fully rooted and running CM7 with everything backed up nicely. Thanks!

I used Linux. I downloaded Ubuntu as well as the Universal USB Installer. Then I booted to Ubuntu off the USB key. There are clear and easy instructions at unbuntu.com. Firefox installs by default and then you go to Alpharevx and download it. I did it all inside of Linux in minutes, and I am a complete Linux noob.

I have had great battery life today, but since I just did it, it is hard to tell. I have been hitting the phone constantly setting stuff up.

Time for my own noob question. S-off achieved and clockworkmod installed. I even did a backup. Now what? Some places say you need to copy some files to complete the root and gain Superuser status. Some just say flash CM7.
I'm guessing that flashing CM7 also adds Superuser status, but if you want to keep the stock rom and gain true root then you need to copy those other files. Am I correct?

That is correct. If you dont want to load CM7 just yet which still is in beta then you can just load SuperUser. I had trouble with the SuperUser file I downloaded from one of the howto's. It kept Force Closing on me so I jsut went to the Market and downloaded "Superuser" by ChainsDD.

Lol I ended up installing the Superuser files just so I could use rom manager to install cm7.

Sorry I have to ask this question but searching the forums did not quite answer my question. I want to root my phone just to be able to remove the bloatware. Is all I have to do is do the s-off procedure to remove the bloatware or do I have to install one of the customer ROMs to get rid of them?

You can use the bloatfreezer app and remove apps. The easiest way is to download jcase plainjane froyo debloated Rom. It's the same Rom on your phone now but no bloatware.
Unfortunately gb is being released. Do not download the ota it will turn s off again. Wait for a dev to remove the bloatware and root it.
