The forever Mouse

So I saw a blip on my feed somewhere about a mouse subscription from Logitech. At first, I thought it was a joke/meme/satire....

Then, a short while ago...I found out that it's none of those.

Logitech's 'forever mouse' could mean peripherals go the way of coffee beans, TVs, and printer ink by pushing a subscription

I'm tempted to write to Logi and tell them what I think of this, This, in my opinion, is nothing short of asinine.

Ugh...I just can't even come up with any rational thought....just ugh.

This would be a good reason to just go back to a basic wired USB mouse. Who really needs all of those bells and whistles, especially if they're just going to leverage them to hold the consumer hostage?

This is the dumbest thing I've seen so far. A mouse is one piece of hardware that lasts a long time anyway. I have a Logitech wired gaming mouse that cost $30. It's been fine for 2½ years now, and I don't see any reason to buy another mouse for a long time, much less subscribe for a mouse.

The mice I choose tend to be a bit more expensive, due to I like trackball mice. But your point still stands....they don't need this sort of thing.

In all honesty, if they took this in a different direction: Do any of you remember Project Ara, the modular Smartphone that had major pieces in uniform parts that could be easily replaced? Like the screen, battery, RAM, etc? If this "Forever Mouse" was like that where the cord/battery, left and right buttons, wheel, etc could easily be replaced...that would be a good concept for the name.

It actually isn't. Ink is a consumable, and a subscription service can work in a case like that. I'm on their cheapest $1.50/mo plan by choice since I print very little. There was a line of printers that required a subscription, but those were dirt cheap and subsidized by the subscription.

The reason it was so hated is because everyone was under the false assumption that all HP printers started to require a subscription, and many of those people upset that they couldn't subscribe for a month to get a full cartridge for $1.50 and then immediately cancel and keep using the ink (i.e. stealing it). If you bought an e-series printer and didn't bother to read what you were getting into, that's your own fault. My non-e printer is perfectly capable of using non-subscription ink, as are all other regular HP printers.

But the naysayers are getting their way. HP just announced that they are going to end the service.

Which means I may wind up buying a new one thanks to this and having to revert to buying regular cartridges and spending more over all due to them going bad before I use them all. I've been seeing some good things about laser printers (some people going at much as 5 years on the initial toner cartridge), or maybe I'll look into ink tank printers. Then again I have my own beef with HP and this may be a good excuse to leave them.

For hardware only that doesn't really need constant updates and changes, then yes I would consider a subscription to be rather dumb.

I have one from Epson. I like it. One bottle seems to go a lot further than cartridges.

I have an HP laser printer. The small capacity toner that came with it lasted 2½ years. I got a replacement from Amazon that isn't from HP but works perfectly. It cost me $20. It'll probably last twice as long as the starter toner. My laser printer is monochrome, but I don't need colour printing for my usage.

I almost got a laser printer, but there was a pretty good deal on mine when I got it.

So true, but unfortunately the reality is that anything marketed as "forever" these days really just means you will "pay forever," and quite possibly "regret forever."

Man, I DO remember Project Ara! THAT was a good idea for a phone and I would love to see something like that today in the smartphone industry. Because that would make repairing it easy, like Framework's devices! Google could TOTALLY pull that off, "Pixel Ara".

It was. I think they could have made money hand over fist if they had given it an actual chance.
