The need for HTC Detail 4G help (Mac/PC)

Firstly, We truly need to open a forum for the HTC Detail if at all possible. It would be nice to setup a Detail Forum for all these questions, even if they are similarly based devices. Us detailers would like to find our info aside from the Shifty ones ;)

Second, I want to say how amazing everyone is here for their supporting the Open Source community and allowing us to use our devices to their full potentials. This being my first post as well I wished to send my gratitude out.

Now, how do I root my HTC Detail 4G with MAC? What is the best ROM(s) for this device? I cannot find a clear answer for the life of me! On a partial note, I rather like the sense UI so that would be a nice incorporation. I was enjoying Drew's releases with the Optimus previously, so I may have to make an exception somewhere. Any help would be most gratuitous.

It seems many tutorials work for PC, however I cannot get much of the Sync as I run a MAC and may have to run Parallels, though I'd rather find a native solution versus installing another OS on my machine. I did close to rooting with VISIONary (and it only works for Froyo 2.2, which concerns me about flashing any ROMs) but then it did not like it so much after some moments. z4root works no longer. Some further tutorials I found had "Shift" in the sub folder directories. I tried replacing it with "Detail" but there was no such folder as seen.

For those unknown, the HTC Detail 4G seems to be the same as the HTC Shift 4G but an unlocked version for other providers, such as Credo Mobile. I swapped out for Credo Mobile (I know where my money is going now), and picked up the HTC Detail. Again, no clear answer.

Thanks goes out the community once more for all the tutorials and directions that are learned/gained and inspired from this site have been credible and outstanding. Thank you! :)

Not sure if you've seen this, but I remember seeing this thread pop up over at xda. [Q] HTC Detail = Evo Shift, Root? - xda-developers This thread doesn't really answer any of your questions other than another than other Detail owners confirming the Shift root method works.

Now as far as rooting.. I've always been a windows user and don't have much experience with Mac.. But I believe you can use terminal emulator to root. Since your still on Froyo, follow this guide http://forums.androidcentral.com/ht...htc-shift-faqs-how-tos-updated-3-28-11-a.html Just download the files from that thread str8 to your phone and you can use the terminal emulator app to enter the commands. I've never done it this way but pretty sure it will work the same as adb.. I believe the only difference will be you'll need to type "busybox" (w/o quotes) before entering the commands. I'm not 100% percent on how this works since I've never done it but in theory it should work.

Also, a good place to get help is the IRC freenode Web IRC (qwebirc)

Hah! Okay all these methods finally worked.

I guess I was adding too many commands and I forgot to extract a folder...*shrug*

I ended up doing all the md5sum commands to root permanently under Terminal Emulator. The only thing I left out was the last part as #6 as it instructed, though there was no bold or any indication for me to stop following instructions (forgetting to read the fine print sometimes)

Thank you! I am now going to try to find a good ROM now... any thoughts of the best ones? or..well trial and error works too :)
O:-)

One last quick update. I did this successfully without the last two options from my computer w/o using terminal emulator (much easier to copy/paste). Thanks again for a rocking forum. Flashed PERFECTLY* with CM7 Nightly Build onto Detail through CREDO MOBILE. :)

Now to find a good Camera/Voicemail app? I did not have the original OS long enough to figure out if they had a good Voicemail, but I know the camera/video was pretty good..though I doubt it would be much different as it has the same physical lens either way you go.

Are you still running CM7? Are there any issues with the software? I have an HTC Detail through Ting, and am not very pleased with Sense, as I had a vanilla android previously. Did you update the radios as well? Thanks.
