If all you need to know is your phone number, what is to keep someone else from locking your phone? Even if it is just a friend as a prank? I do seem to recall reading somewhere that you could only do this either two or three times a day.

You are correct, but you can just unlock it the normal way you always do. Also the two times per day remote locking is correct. So the most they could prank you is two times per day. The bad part is if they prank you twice in one day and then that same day someone steals your phone! Very long odds but still possible.
