?? The Official Anticipation Thread For The EVO 3D? ??

switching to evo 3d

original pre minus here.. im jumping ship to this. i hate to do it, but i was really rubbed wrong by hp just doing away with 2.0 update for us after they promised to give it. I know good and well though after playing with my wife's epic, that this phone is going to much much much better. I cant wait! i dont care about battery life.. the pres battery sucks anyway..

3) Sick of the subpar camera. Outdoors is actually very good. Indoors? Not so much. And it seems like the pictures are getting worse and worse for some reason. I look at some of the shots I took when I first got the Evo, and something's not right now.

I'm actually surprised how good my Evo "party" pictures come out indoors and that means I always have a "camera" with me for "what's happening now" and instant uploads to Facebook.

Here's a tip for better indoor shots: control the ISO yourself. I've noticed that the "auto" ISO mode is pretty tame, I've found if I'm indoors (especially in a dark bar) that setting the ISO up to 1250 works wonders; the camera autofocus will actually work (if its set to "auto" its usually trying to take pictures in the dark at 200 or 400 and it can't "see" your subjects) and you can see people in the frame prior to taking the shot for manual focusing if you like. Yes, the pictures will have more grain in them but often the dual flashes will help compensate for that.

One of the reasons I switched back to Myn's Warm 2.2 from Warm Z is the HTC Sense 2.0 camera software from the Desire only goes up to 800 ISO and that doesn't work nearly as well as the 1250 setting when you're out having fun at night. Give it a shot!

I'll be pre-ordering the Evo 3D the first day that's available (hopefully at Best Buy again, I had a great experience purchasing my launch day Evo with them last year, especially being able to setup a time for pickup). I was disappointed by the lack of Sprint/HTC/Evo news at CES in January but this announcement more than made up for it, hitting nearly all my wishlist items for an Evo replacement. Reasons I'll be pre-ordering the Evo 3D:

- Dedicated camera button: I'm an avid Facebook photo poster and I love using my Evo for that, but have always wished it had a "real" dedicated camera button for taking pictures. From everything I've heard the camera button on the Evo 3D is fantastic (Myriam Joire of Engadget Mobile raved about the Evo 3D's camera button and she's a pretty harsh critic of such things).

- 1.2 GHz Dual Core processor with 1GB RAM, upgraded graphics: should keep it current for a year, the current Evo feels fine now but at times I'd love more speed/RAM, this combo will knock it out of the park

- Gingerbread and Sense 2.x (my assumption there on Sense, Sprint/HTC says 'latest version'): I played around with Sense 2.0 via Myn's Warm Z ROM based on the Desire and I absolutely loved it, so many great little enhancements. As I've mentioned I hope they keep the 1250 ISO for the cameras found in on the Evo 4G, and I remember there was some annoying thing about the email client but can't remember exactly what it was (having the delete check boxes like gMail is awesome though!).

- QHD Screen: I use SlingPlayer a lot, will be nice to have a perfect ratio screen for high def.

- 3D capabilities: I've been playing around with my Nintendo 3DS for over a week now and I'm surprised how much I enjoy the 3D display, not only for games but there was a 3D music video included in the update and it looked really good - excited about the possibility of 3D YouTube and movies. Don't care much about outputting 3D to external 3D displays though.

- DLNA: Just about ever electronic device in my house now supports DLNA so it will be nice that the Evo has it too, more convenient than the HDMI cable for quick viewing of files.

What I'll Miss (but won't stop me):
- Micro HDMI jack - was nice to use a standard cable, not thrilled about the USB to HDMI option but I hardly ever use that anyway.

- Kickstand: I never really used it that much, but its fun to play with when you're sitting in a meeting bored out of your mind. And iPhone people look at it and are envious :)

Notice I didn't mention 4G. It doesn't sway my decision either way. The service is totally hit or miss in every "4G city" I've been to and I live in downtown Chicago, supposedly blanketed with 4G, and I rarely turn it on. However in the few spots where I know it works well its fantastic (uploading pictures from the Cubs home opener the other day was lightning fast and most of my 3G friends had to wait until after the game, too much congestion on the 3G network). I was on Myn's Warm Z for a month and didn't miss 4G at all. Its a nice option to have, anyway.

I won't be selling my Evo 4G right away, will need to see if all this hype lives up to reality and making sure that HTC doesn't bork the phone by making root overly difficult or other nonsense. But so far, for me and how I use my Evo 4G, this phone is the near-perfect upgrade.

all correct BUT you are are leaving out 2 HUGE aspect of the phone that are very important in my book (cuz i owned a pre for a long time)... The Galaxy S 2 is wayyyyy lighter and wayy thinner than the EVO 3D. EVO 3D is about 170 g and the GS2 is just under 120. that is huuuuge. its also about 1/3 thinner. i am seriously considering the GS2 over the EVO because of this. i have held the Thunderbold, and mannn is that thing frickin bolky and heavy (it has similar size and weight). i dont want a phone to feel like its pulling my pants down

The physical shape of a phone is a very personal thing. I have a seidio active case on my EVO which bulks the phone up quite a bit. I took the case off for the first time in a while and without it on, the EVO felt really skinny to me and actually less comfortable to hold than with the extra bulk when the case is in place. Any current EVO users won't be surprised by the evo 3ds dimensions since they will be very similar, even in weight. I went from a palm pre to the EVO and had no issue adjusting to the jump in size. I really don't want a skinny and super light anorexic EVO. I like how it feels. But, different strokes for different folks so its totally understandable that you prefer the form factor of the galaxy s2.

Marketing sometimes is a really bad thing, it tends to confuse the consumer by just throwing out numbers at people, and people that don't do their own research make uninformed decisions. Yes they are "only" 5 MP cameras, but the MP count isn't the only thing that's important when it comes to making a good camera, it's many other things like the type of lens is being used and on and on. The iPhone 4 camera is only 5 MP, but it takes better pics than the 8 MP in the Evo. The MP is just a measure of how high a resolution shot you can take.....5 MP far exceeds anything any TV or Computer monitor can display. The only time these insane resolutions are important is if you want to print very high quality prints on a very high quality printer using very high quality paper.....and...if you spend the money on all of that, you are probably going to buy a REAL camera.

It doesn't matter if it is 5 MP or 8 MP, the cameras are still very small and are therefore not able to capture as much light as the bigger lens on a point and shoot camera can. They also have no decent optical zoom, again, due to the lack of space and the proper hardware.

So, don't base your decision of buying this phone on whether there is a 8 mp camera in there or not....it's just not relevant.

I recognize that the MP rating isn't everything, I suppose I should have made that statement (but had limited time to post and was on my phone).

I recognize that for all intents and purposes, one of those 5mp cameras is a much higher quality camera than the one currently on the Evo. Do I believe that will be the case? No. Do I have anything to back that up? Not really.

High MP resolution is for big prints, but a high MP COMBINED with a high-quality sensor makes for really sharp images on a computer, and for nice prints.

All I'm really trying to say here is that I highly doubt that they have made much of an effort to increase the normal, still-photo quality on the phone. As for me personally, I would have RATHER they done this, than invest time and money developing the 3D technology.

Allow me to say -- if the still photo quality is as good as the current Evo, I'll have no reservations in purchasing this phone. It's what I want, and I think it's the most kick-ass phone yet announced. If they were to offer one with the 3D and one with a sweet high quality camera inside... I'll tell you right now, I'd take the one with the nicer camera. But that's just me, and it does sound like a lot of people will enjoy the 3d capability.

Hi everyone.

I'm really (really!) looking forward to this phone. Just to give you an idea: I've owned a Samsung Rant for a couple of years!

I was about to upgrade to an EVO last week, and then i saw the news of the EVO 3D. Rather than go with the Arrive, or the almost-here Nexus S 4G, or leaving Sprint for an iPhone, I'm waiting for this one. I never really cared for phones, but this has me excited.

jeffreytz: a case with a kickstand will be released (according to one of the hands-on reviews).

Yup, that's why I'm not too worried about it, although I haven't used a case since my Treo 650 (back when it was stylish to clip giant PDA phones to your belt, or was it?). I only use Clarivue anti-glare screen protectors on my Evo and it still looks like the day I bought it.

Agreed.

However, what do you think will create more hype...them being able to say "it has a really really good camera!" or "it can do 3d"?

Myriam's reactions to the Evo 3D camera on the Engadget Mobile podcast (which are based actual firsthand experience) indicate that the camera is "great" and furthermore, the shutter button is the best one she's ever used. In that keeping the lens steady while shooting is a big part of how sharp your resulting image is, a great shutter button can make a huge difference in picture quality. So it's a certainty that the Evo 3D camera will outperform the Evo 4G camera, and quite likely that the difference will be huge.

This, of course, makes the wait for the Evo 3D even more excruciating.

Dumping my launch day Pre - . Just can't take anymore. This am my phone died and it literally took 10mins from plug in to full boot....Can't wait for the EVO3d!

I can't wait for this phone. I currently have a MyTouch 3G and will be transferring to Sprint when this phone comes out. If Sprint signal in my neck of the woods isn't acceptable, I will just return it and go over to Verizon for a dual core offering there. Either way, I will have a dual core beast. I just hope all the stars align the the EVO 3D will be and stay my next phone.

SPB Shell 3D getting better with each updates. Can't wait for an update that will fix some of the major concerns.

Do you think they will add the option for a live wallpaper? If so, the least they can do is put a warning for people new to android that it may slow performance when they are about to put a live wallpaper on SPB shell 3D

I hope there will live wallpaper still in the new Sense...so far, in all the videos I have seen so far they always showed static wallpaper. Maybe it wasn't implemented yet??

Check out the cheezy demo site for the EV3D over at sprint, it looks sense wallpapers are live =)

I'm wondering if Sprint will be launching its HTC EVO 3D - before Apple's IPhone 5.
