The phone has started to heat up dramatically during use

Samsung Galaxy S4.
The phone has started to heat up dramatically during use, is charging very slowly (charged approx 8 hours and still not 100%) and will actually loose charge if being used while plugged in to the charger. It is the charging unit that came with the phone and that I've been using since new. The phone itself is getting hot, not the battery, with the hottest spot being the top 3rd, screen side.

Welcome to Android Central! I'd still suspect the battery first--can you try a different one?

Your phone can be warm because of a poor phone signal, a poor WiFi connection, a bad sd card or some apps that use a lot of power such as mapping apps. Look at battery in the settings and see what is using the most current. Hold down the home key a few seconds and the screen will show everything that is running. You can turn the apps off by tapping close all at the bottom of the screen. Let us know what you find!
