The Nexus 4 is still for sale. There will be a Nexus 5 later in the year so not all hope is lost for you.
Why is there an assumption that a Nexus 5 is coming?

The S4 is made by Samsung and the N4 is made by LG. They both run Android. LG has never been in any phone war with Samsung. I would think HTC would be a closer competitor. With the N4, it was just a good opportunity for LG to show they can make a flagship device and Google to get more pure vanilla goodness out. Neither was interested in raping the consumer with this device. The whole title of this thread is redundant.
The Nexus 4 was already selling out, and it was worse than the S4 in most ways. This has everything the N4 had plus more options plus (most importantly) the Galaxy branding.
Now we will no longer have to compromise on features/options or having vanilla Android. We can have both.

The N4 is $350, the S4 is $650.
Advantage Nexus.

Just goes to show that some people will never be pleased under any circumstance.
Right. Advantage in price does go to the Nexus. Every other possible comparison couldn't be more in the S4's favor.
Everyone talks about how great Stock, Vanilla Android is and why the fast updates make everything worth it. Google gives them a great flagship device with all of these "must-haves" and suddenly everyone thinks it's a bad idea because "the general public wont care." Just goes to show that some people will never be pleased under any circumstance.
Wait so this isn't the Nexus 5? I like everything about this phone except the price. To me its not worth the $450 over a regular S4 that's on contract.
It's a great product.
I only stated, personally, as a grad student, there's nothing in that devices that warrants a $300 up charge from my Nexus 4.
I also don't believe this will be a massive seller or drastically change the game. It's more like Google and Samsung are saying, "Hey, thanks for all the revenue, in return, here's a treat we just cooked up." Just the way I look at it.
Until now they've had to reason to...the best phones never ran Vanilla Android. Now that we have a true flagship phone without being neutered by google, i think we will see a significant change.
You get what you pay for.
The S4 is exactly the same price range as any flagship phone. My HTC Rezound was $700 retail when it came out.

You get what you pay for? The N4 has zero lag, an ?ber-fast processor, an amazing screen (can't say that about the GS4's AMOLED), and a sexy design (again?).

True, it is just an assumption. Then again, I assume there will also be a new iPhone model sometime in the future, just as I assume I'll wake up tomorrow and it will be Thursday.
But you're correct, we're all just making assumptions here as there's no concrete evidence supporting our guesses.
