How does Samsung Galaxy S phones and other Android smart phones store the screenshots? They save a screenshot as PNG, JPG or JPEG?

All the Android phones I've ever used (LG, Samsung) save screenshots as .png

I'm not sure if that's always been the case across the entire Android ecosystem.
